| Posted: | | | | Leaving all the legal discussions out of this thread, I now have a majority of MY (owned) movie library on a NAS device. I have yet to catalog quite a few of them. As I look at DVD Profiler to adding movies there isn't a way (as far as I can tell) to identify movies that are not on a DVD, Blue Ray or HD-DVD disc.
I would like to be able to identify movies on a hard drive as such. Have I overlooked a feature like that? If it doesn't exist, I would like to request that when adding a movie I can identify a media type as 'storage' or better yet, let the user define a media type other than the 3 provided.
Regards, David |

| Posted: | | | | David: You are correct, this is DVDProfiler, not HDDprofiler. Now of course, you can do whatever you wish locally. Speaking very personally, I still do not consider HDD storage to be a viable option, for a whole list of reasons, Hard drive Space required would be tops on my list, followed by backup. This may change someday, but i don't see it anytime in the near term for sure. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

| Posted: | | | | Well, thanks Skippy for your opinion. Maybe I'm ahead of the curve - a real adventurer. Regardless, I'm looking for a simple user definable field to identify those movies that I have on a hard drive. Not earth shattering and certainly won't have an impact on how you choose to watch your movies. Hopefully this is something that can be accomodated in a future release by the AUTHOR. | Posted: | | | | Well, David, by my calculations, to put my current library on HDD storage would require somewhere around 30 TB at a minimum, that is only film storage, no other software or backups and that is simply cost prohibitive, at this time.

| Posted: | | | | I tend to think your collection far exceeds the average (just saw your profile). So yes, not every solution is for everyone. For me, mine is working just great so far and one little variable value in a field would let me know that the movie is stored in storage rather than on a physical disc. Simple request I hope. Do I worry about backups? Sure, but I have the media to 're-rip' if necessary. My critical data on the other hand is backed up to an offline drive separate from the NAS device storing my media. | Posted: | | | | As long as it remains DVDProfiler, David I wouldn't hold my breath. I can't even say i have yet seen a program that I would consider suitable for HDD management. But I would guess that if you think about it, there are ways within Profiler to work it, like Tags, for example, of course such data cannot be Contributed but I think you could mange it somehow.

| Posted: | | | | When i went to the army, i tryed to record some of my DVD's to the laptop, so that i wouldnt have to carry the actual discs with me (they could get scratched). It took few hours just to record the movie, and it took about 6GB space to store it. After recording few, I bought a better disc wallet instead Anyway i think recording all my DVD's to a media PC would be awesome, but cant see myself doing it anytime soon with the current hardware. |

| Posted: | | | | I also store backup copies on the PC but converted into WMV-HD for widescreen and DivX for 4:3. Amounts to about 1GB per hour. It's a time-consuming project however, taking up to four hours to process a single DVD and two programs to process for WMV-HD but half that for DivX. |

| Posted: | | | | Yea, I found those as well but they aren't on the 'add' forms so many more clicks, etc. Quoting detlefs: Quote: Quoting steinyd:

| Posted: | | | | Thanks Skippy. Do you represent the author? If not, I've got your opinion noted. Would like to leave my request as noted. I appreciate you don't have a need for this and it wouldn't be suitable for you. However, it seems to be a minor request requiring a user definable value in an existing field. No workflow required. | Posted: | | | | As I buy each movie I use a 'ripping' tool to store the 'main movie' only - avoiding all other 'garbage' and storing it to my network attached NAS device. The process takes about 15 minutes, doesn't require any interaction from me once I press start. Again, as 'skippy' points out it isn't a practical solution for everyone especially for libraries of collections such as his. However, there are more and more such solutions coming to market and I'm having some decent results as an 'early adopter'. My requirement / request is actually quite simple and would prefer it to be on the 'add' forms along the media type field so that I can identify my movie storage on one of the media formats, including a hard drive. Quite simple actually. For those early adopters such as myself, it would be very handy to be able to identify this. How do you figure it would be minor? I would reckon all but impossible! How would you go about identifying the film for starters? It's got no EAN/UPC, the features (or lack thereof) would be different from the disc (or missing entirely), the compression will be different so reviews of picture and sound would be meaningless, audio tracks could have been removed, all sorts of differences from the source material (whatever that is - DVD, download, HD-DVD, old VHS etc) will be present. This being the case each one would require a whole new profile so as to be accurate (plus some unique method of identifying it) and since you are the only one with that specific version on your hard drive nobody could check or review the contribution and so you might as well keep it local anyway. At best any indication for 'on HD' would be only the same as adding your own Tag to that effect so I suspect you'll have more luck supporting something like the Feature Request to allow Tags to be displayed in Reports than of getting this one implemented. | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |

| Posted: | | | | BTE, David, I tried to offer you some friendly advice and your response is obviously intended to be disrespectful. Si I have news for you, jerk, for HDD to work it is going to depend on people like myself not people like you who apparently don't have a large enough collection to fill a thimble. How many do you have... 100?

| Posted: | | | | So, sounds like I'm missing a fundamental benefit of this product for user provided submissions. Sorry, I wasn't looking at it from that perspective. I'm purely looking to identify a movie I've added to my library, as having been ripped and stored on a hard drive. So when I print my report and store it in a binder in our theater, I'd like to identify the movie has having been stored on a hard drive or having been kept in a traditional sense, on DVD/HD-DVD/Blue Ray. It would be great if I could identify that at the same time I'm adding the movie to my library inventory. As to me being the only one with the requirment, heck, every request usually starts with a 'first' and as socialized you find out whether or not others would benefit from the feature as well. As I only posted this yesterday and have only had responses from the diehards, it probably needs a bit more time to come to a 'boil'. I personally know plenty of people with a mix of media storage such as myself. Not sure if they are using DVD Profiler for inventorying their movies. I would imagine the author will continue to look for ways of expanding the use of the tool as it evolves. It continues to be the best product in its space and glad to see it has been resurrected. | Posted: | | | | I meant no disrespect and i think what was intended to be simple request to the author has turned into a heavily opinionated thread by a few. I purchase movies I enjoy watching - not to fill the library of congress so I can pound my chest and say, "i have more movies than you". Your 'I'm not Blockbuster' website certainly indicates you've chased your friends away and your attitude seems to bleed over to this site as well. I realize you have your use for the product and a different perspective. I respect that. You've let that perspective be known. You are entitled. I have mine and let's leave it at that.
