| Posted: | | | | It would be nice if there were an option to enter the Video Codec, when you chose HD DVD or Blu-Ray Disc.
e.g. VC1 or MPEG2 or AVC ....
I know that it is not important for DVDs but for HD Media it would be a nice Feature! | | | Last edited: by RichiLIVE |

| Posted: | | | | I'm not up to date on HD compression, so I'm not sure if this is important information. Does it make that much of a difference as to which codec is used? I mean, when you look to buy a disc, do you check which codec was used and go with a different format if it's one you don't like? |

No. I also don't look at the case type, the studios, the cast/crew, covers, audio tracks, production year, disc IDs, etc. I could go on, but I think I made my point. Personally, I'd like to see this also. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. |

With all due respect. I am trying to figure what the Codec does for me post-purchase,I can see a use for it in pre-purchase but overall I am not sure ite really adds any value for us. Bu I could be wrong.

Skip I'd agree that it would be useful before a purchase ... not sure about after the fact (maybe useful when determining whether to upgrade to a re-release). Same thing could be said about whether a DVD is single or dual layer. I'd also like to see this feature. |

I take it you don't use the Wish List tab, then... I often have profiles in my Wish List months before I buy them. I don't hi-def yet, so I have no idea how easy this information is to come by. | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. Registered: May 29, 2000 (at InterVocative) |

Perhaps I'd like to know just how many VC-1 films I have in my collection compared to other codecs. Or perhaps I'd like to specifically find an AVC encoded film so I can compare it to a VC-1 disc. Perhaps there will be a future update to my player that fixes a problem with a specific codec and I'd like to find a film that has that codec to test with. Maybe I'm interested in dumping all the MPEG2 titles in my collection because I don't like them. Just because it doesn't add value for you doesn't mean it doesn't add value. Most of the data out there already is useless to most people. We catalog it because it's there, we can and we like to obsess over small details. I think this should be a poll and the options should be: I'd use this feature, I wouldn't use this feature and This feature would hinder how I currently use the program. I've voted yes to many suggestions in the past that I personally would find very useless. But as long as they don't change the way I use the program, I'd happy to support good ideas. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. I am not being critical, I am simply trying to understand it. It doesn't seem to me to bring anything of import, and it's not relevant if i would or would not use it or even you for that matter. It seems to me that this could easily be accomodated through the Tag system
Codecs VC1 MPEG2 etc, etc, etc.
Perhaps there is a broader usage I am missing, but it seems to me to be of very narrow usage and NOT easily enterable by ALL users. It is not marked on the Package typically, it is not readily apparent on the disc, and I believe requires tooling to be sorted out.

There also no need for the SRP! Isn't it? I think the Codecs are very interesting.
When I put something in my wishlist I can look which Codec the Disc uses and so I can decide to buy or not to buy the disc. Also interesting for statistics and to sort my Database.
The SRP isn't on the cover but it's also in the Database! |

Case type for example. I say make the request and let Ken sort it out. With my Toshiba player, I can find out the video codec extremely easily. But I'm not sure what the X-Box add on does or any of the Blu-ray players out there. Of course they're still people out there who don't have DVD-ROM drives and can't accurately read layers, regions, disc IDs, etc. That doesn't stop that data from being filled in by those who have the ability to do so. I say add it now and if there aren't many who can add the data, so be it. Better than adding it in a couple years from now and having to do a mass update of thousands of discs. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. SRP is totally different. It can be used to determine the monetary value of one's collection for insurance purposes. And that's a perfect example of how one user might find value in data that another user finds complete useless. Just because some users find the codec information useless doesn't mean others won't find something of value there. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. | Posted: | | | | I don't know, Marki. You aren't convincing me, but then I don't have to be convinced. I am actuyally tryiung to figure out if it has a broad usage and something which I might be interested. I am left with Why do I care? Especially when people start throwing in extarneous crap to try and comment rather tha helping me figure it out. the question is ultimately Ken's not mine, but as usual my comments are misconstrued with the end result being the answers are not helpful.
Why do I care what the Codec is or is it just another piece of data.
