Diacetyl, a chemical that gives foods a buttery taste, has been linked to a rare, irreversible lung disease. One of the most common foods using this ingredient is microwave popcorn. Bronchiolitis obliterans, a devastating disease that destroys the small airways in the lungs, has been linked to diacetyl.

There has been a public health debate that has reached Congress and has resulted in tens of millions of dollars to settle lawsuits. Although some microwave popcorn companies may eliminate diacetyl, Congress and the flavoring industry are assessing the danger and deciding on what steps, if any, should be implemented. The Bush administration, along with some business groups, alleges that there is not enough scientific evidence to warrant pressing government limits and intervention.

This lung disease was first noticed in a small but alarming number of people who worked in microwave popcorn plants across the nation. But it may go beyond workers since a man who ate microwave popcorn daily for several years developed the same disease found in factory workers.

My advice...make popcorn the old fashioned way.

I used to eat that microwave crud but when I read about this some years ago, I went and purchased a small, used, old fashioned popcorn popper, the kind they have in Theaters. It makes excellent popcorn and I use real butter .

Hmmm, the Canadian Tire near me has an air popper selling for $18. I think I may wander over and pick one up.

Hi Guys,

Check out: Snopes

Perhaps not taking a 'big hit' from the just removed bag ( or Gas mask, or something like bob9000's avatar) will keep us safe.

Stay away from those hot air thingies ... the popcorn is almost impossible to sugar (or to salt as you barbarians do    ) so it's very healthy, but also very boring.

I bought a machine like this a while back and the popcorn it makes is really great. Something similar should be available in the US or Canada.

I have something like that, and I really like the fact it doubles as the bowl

This is what I use.  It was a Christmas present from my wife.

Hot air poppers are all right. I like mine made in a big pan & popped in a little hot oil. Of course then you have add butter & salt.

If yer gonna have popcorn, have popcorn!

Pop it in coconut oil, use real butter and salt it with popcorn-granule salt.

Or why bother with air-popped, non-buttered, lite salt fluff? That ain't popcorn...
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

I understand the guy who ate popcorn daily, had a thing with the smell of microwave popcorn and would stick head in the bag to get the maximum effect It wasn't that he liked the popcorn so much as the aroma.
