Following on from the debate here, I suggest that we mark Adult titles by using a checkbox instead of using the ratings field.
I think this would give people a lot more flexibility as to how they deal with their adult titles and also allow us to record titles that are both adult AND have a rating.

Seconded. And it would be good to then use the checkbox as a basis for what gets displayed in one's on-line collection (in connection with your user settings for the on-line). Thus we could eliminate the existing problem with displaying the highest rating in the on-line as it gets mixed up with adult.

Yeah, it would be nice to hide titles that we're embarrassed to own.

Will we be embarrassed of the Adult check box, though?

Other than this I would want the Adult genre to be renamed to Erotic or Porn.

I disagree.

The original question that started the other debate was How do you determine if a film is "Adult" or not? and the answer seems to be that "Adult" is not an official rating.  The "Adult" option in the ratings drop list seems to exist solely to enable the display of these titles to be suppressed in the DVDprofiler database or the online listing.

I think that the Parental Controls already offer everyone the ability to suppress the display of an "Adult" genre film from both the database display and the online display if they want to hide these titles.  I'm not in favor of adding another checkbox to the application because the feature that you're requesting already exists in the Parental Control options.

I'd suggest that the Contribution Rules are changed to say, "Always use the Rating shown on the DVD cover. When there is no rating, or an unrated version of the film on the disc, use the NR rating. Use the “Adult” genre for all Adult films as this enables users to suppress the display of "Adult" genre films in the startup database display and on-line listings."

In addition, I'd remove the "Adult" option from the rating list and assign the "Adult" genre to any films that are currently Rated "Adult".

I'd welcome the addition of "Erotic" to the genre list - "Adult" is a generic term that is open to interpretation ... I think that "Erotic" is a little more honest and less likely to cause offense (and knee-jerk reactions) than "Porn" which is also a subjective term.
Everything in the world is a second order system, if you're not too fussy. And if it isn't, you are.

I agree with the Check box, and let the Ratings be the Ratings and the Genres be the Genres.

I agree with you on that Martin. This is certainly clearer than the term "adult" who could be Sex, nudity, violence, ... depending of the person.

Edit: I personally think that using "XXX" as a genre is better than "pornography". But I can live with any of the two term.

I will say here what I just said in the other thread... As I believe it is more then XXX/Porn = Adult... much more.

Quote:
That is exactly what I mean... there is more to it then just XXX/Porn I don't buy the XXX/Porn movies... but I do have several Playboy Videos and Girls Gone Wild videos... in my eyes these are adult videos. I wouldn't sit a kid in front of them.. so that to me is adult.

So.. I definitely agree with your A, B & C for sure... I can't think of anything for D... in my opinion D & E would be the same category. And F... in my opinion it comes the the extent of such things.

But yeah... when all is said and done... it most definitely is much more then XXX/Porn = Adult.

And like you said... According to whom?

What I think I would actually like to see... is maybe XXX added to ratings with an option not to show them at start-up/online. Then also have something like an adult checkbox in the personalize section with the option not to show them also at start-up/online.

This way you will have it out of the ratings... protect the younger eyes online and in program... and it can mean what it means to each individual... without effecting everyone else.

This is why the term is so hard to describe, it have a different meaning for everyone. Some type of movie are evident (XXX), some are quasi-evident (playboy/GGW), other not obvious (sexploitation like the title who start the other topic) and even violent movie (Cannibal Holocaust, Death Wish,...).

I don't have any child and I grew up with my father alone and he let me did whatever I want, so I'm not the best judge for all the question concerning what a child can or can't watch. That's why I think that the personal checkbox is the best way to deal with that.

With this preference all the problem will be eliminate, since it's become a personnal choice. Each user decide for himself what is adult and his own preference is use for his database and his online collection. The choice is not force to the others and no need to argurment that a breast sighting means adult movie.

After reading these posts it sounds like what is missing is a proper definition of what adult actually means.  The X rating of old was what adult films were.  In other words sex was portrayed on the screen to where you could see everything and it was intended for the adult viewer.  Later the porn industry created the XXX rating in order to try to out do one another, "My film is an X!" "Oh yeah, mine is a XXX!"  This rating was never adopted by the MPA.  This has caused much confusion that is really unnecessary.  I think Ken did a great job naming it "Adult" as it does what it should do.  It is a tag to allow people to know that these movies whether due to gratuitous sex and or violence this movie is intended only for adults.  As for the Playboy and GGW videos the majority of them while they should not be viewed by those under 18 they do not warrant an adult rating, they are easily covered by an NR or an NC-17 as they are not intended for children and there are a lot of NR movies  that are.  I can see going with the NC-17 or just leaving them in the adult rating system.  Then again I would not oppose for certain movies "erotica/porn" returning to their original rating of X.
