How should posts be moderated, if at all?

(For purposes of this poll, I'm not referring to spam posts.)

I picked 'Combination...' as there are times when the whole post has to go.  What I would suggest, in those cases, is that a note be left stating that the post was deleted.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Pretty much the same. In most cases, the post should only be edited. Off the top of my head, the only reason for deleting is for spam posts.

Yep, we've had them since mid March. See this thread started by Ken.

He also said somewhere that they'd deliberately set the bar to extreme and would adjust from there but as you said, it still needs a bit of tweaking (according to most people).

I voted for 'Something Else'

As I stated in another thread, I don't think the moderators should edit a portion of a post.  It's just too easy to take out the context of another part of the post and cause a potentially bigger issue than they were trying to fix.  I think it's best to remove the entire post.

I do think it's better to leave a 'trail' when posts are removed.  Replacing the post contents with Post Removed is usually sufficient.

I wish there was a hope for the 'if at all' clause in the original post to come into effect.  Unfortunately, this forum has not had much success with self-moderation.

I voted for no moderation, meaning that posts have not to be deleted or modified. Anyway, we need to apply forum rules, that means that people who make one of the bannable offenses listed in the rules have to be banned. This must be done publicly, with the reason given, to be sure it is fair. As posts are not modified, everyone could verify this fairness.

If there aren't going to be repercussions, posts shouldn't be moderated at all because, really, what's the point?

I've had a post of mine deleted (and rightfully so, because in hindsight it didn't add to the discussion at hand), but nothing is going to change if there is just deleting of posts without warnings or some sort of punishment.

The deleting/moderating of posts (at this point) is just idle threats.

We may all like to know whether something was fair or not, but it really isn't our decision.  I don't want to see a 'Wall-of-Shame' here.  I'm sure we've all broken one or two rules around here.

I do agree, banning the users who are breaking the rules is the best way.  Eventually they will learn, or the ban will become permanent.  Either way, we end up with a more pleasant and productive forum.  But, I also think that it is sometimes necessary to remove posts to reduce the risk of continued escalation of an issue.

The area that I'm seeing as the worst right now is the Contribution forum.  This is one of the forums that is directly related to the program and the users here and can't fall into the 'Forbidden topic' realm.  There have been numerous incidents where posts have crossed the line into personal attacks. I believe this is all because there is rarely confirmation of the correct answer or clarification of the rule by Invelos.

Once the question or dilemma is posted and opinions are given, Invelos needs to respond in a reasonably quick manner to resolve the issue.  Otherwise, nothing is resolved and we end up with a 10 page thread with the same opinions being expressed in harsher and harsher ways.  We can all agree to disagree, but these are situations where that doesn't work.

I think they'd rather we sorted things out by ourselves. However, I agree that if it's clear that we aren't going to, say after 2-3 pages, we should get an official response.

I agree.  By the 3rd page, both sides (or more) of any issue have been expressed and any consensus (if there is one to be had) has been had.  This is time for a thread to be locked IMO.

However, I would hope that in locking a thread, Invelos staff give us some idea how the issue should be resolved.  Merely locking a thread because no consensus is reached and posters have resorted to name calling, etc., doesn't tell those of us who are interested in the topic (not the name calling) where Invelos stands on the topic.
