I want the field that we call Title today split into two. The Edition field has nothing to do with it.
The first use case has been brought up before: TV Shows.
Today we have cases like
Title: Raumschiff Enterprise: Die komplette erste Staffel Original Title: Star Trek: The Complete First Season
Title: 8 Simple Rules: Season One: Disc 1 Original Title: 8 Simple Rules... for Dating My Teenage Daughter: Season One: Disc 1
What I propose is to split the actual title from what is a season/disc descriptor. This way there would be no more confusion about whether or not it belongs int the original title field, too and in what language.
The CLT results would also be more consistent because it does not make a difference if Siddig El Fadil was credited as such on Disc 1 or 6 of Deep Space Nine's Season 1. The CLT shouldn't show this as two different "movies". What does matter is that he was credited Alexander Siddig in later seasons.
A second use case that comes to mind (but I have to admit I haven't thought that through, it literally just came to my mind while typing this) is when a localized title uses the original title and then some "witty" tagline-title like

I'm not sure about DJ Doena's second point, but a simple field called "season indicator" would do a world of good for accuracy of the CLT numbers. | | | Last edited: by T!M |

Skip I agree. Thsi will most likely just move the dispute to what goes in the title vs volume box, much like we currently have with editions. |

Season indicator: YES Subtitle/Extension/Tag line: NO Agree. The first would be very good for the CLT. (And Imho a seperating of the season/disc would be good in any way) The second doesn't have a benefit for CLT. But would bring up some or should i better say many discussions. If a tagline could be clearly cut, then yes. but I don't think this will work. |

Agree. The first would be very good for the CLT. I'm not in favor to add a new field for title. We have already four fields for this item, and a new one will mean new rules with their interpretation discussions, new contributions for quite nothing (some people love to increase their contributions score). The fact it would be good for CLT has strictly no value, as Common name/CLT system is the main failure of the program, the main cause of a huge mess in the database. If Ken has time to improve his product, please let him work on proper name linking, not on a CLT that should be killed as soon as possible. | | | Images from movies |

Don't add more fields - and more trouble - because the CLT / Common name system is flawed. Fix the problem instead. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

| Posted: | | | | While I'm (like Yves) not in favor of adding yet another field to the profile, it would definitely make things easier to link.
If (and that's a big IF) another field should be added, and if I understand Karstens initial post, it should look like this:
Title TV episode descriptor Edition Sort title Original title
The original title field should only reflect the name of the series, just as we don't put editions in. Then again, we could do that now as well. The only drawback is there's an option where users can list the title by "original title". My question is: How many users list their collection that way, and is it an option to delete this feature from a future version of DVDP? If that's a viable option, then there's no need for another field, and it's much easier to achieve the goal of a more accurate CLT. |

| Posted: | | | | Of course an overhaul of the linking system would be the better way.
But if this won't happen it's a good idea.
And btw, this gives more freedom to the users, so I still like it. |

If that's a viable option, then there's no need for another field, and it's much easier to achieve the goal of a more accurate CLT. I have listed my collection by Original Title and without some sort of season descriptor it ain't a pretty sight. In this topic http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=481636 another solution was mentioned: A Season Descriptor linked to the Original title field. In that way the complete title on the front cover can be entered in the Title field. The actual title in the episodes credits (The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charlie's Angels etc.) can be entered in the Original Title field and in the corresponding Season Descriptor the season number(s) are entered of the episodes. I proposed a Subtitle-like structure. So you can thick the season numbers of the profile. Two examples: Example 1: Brothers and Sisters: The Complete First Series (locality: UK) Title: Brothers and Sisters: The Complete First Series Edition: Original Title: Brothers & Sisters Season: 1 Example 2: Angel: Cordelia: The Vampire Anthology (locality: Netherlands) Title: Angel: Cordelia Edition: The Vampire Anthology Original Title: Angel Season: 1, 2 & 3 I have the language set to English (US) but I can imagine when using English (UK) that the term 'Series' in stead of 'Season' appears, for Dutch 'Seizoen' and so on. I hope that the Season Descriptor can be converted to the online credit lookup tool somehow, meaning that in the second example we get three entries in the CLT: Angel: Season 1, Angel: Season 2 and Angel: Season 3. In the first example only one: Brothers & Sisters: Season 1. It's just a thought. I'm all for a better linking system but I don't know whether that is even possible so that's why I propose this. | | | Cor | | | Last edited: by Corne |
