| Posted: | | | | I would like the subtitles to be listed in the order in which they are encoded on the disc. Just like the Audio tracks.
And also numbered (1,2,3,4..) as they are on most players. | | | Last edited: by No-way |

| Posted: | | | | I just want accurate information. Seem like most people in here wants the info to be accurate, so why not also the subtitles.
In most standalone player the subtitles are numbered (1,2,3,4) and if the movie has started with no subtitles, you have to push a button x number of times to get to your language subtitles. But that x number differ from dvd to dvd.
So besides having more accurate info, you will also know how many times you have to push that button.
And before people start to post "that something I would never use", just remember that we are not all americans in here. And some of us are dependent of subtitles to fully understand. |

| Posted: | | | | The only real advantage I would see in this that for some languages you have more than 1 subtitle-set (e.g. Spanish for Latin America and Spanish (Castellan)), this could then be traced correctly. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! Honestly, how many people would sit there, ready to watch a film, and look to Profiler to see how many times they need to hit the button to get to the desired subtitle. I know I wouldn't. As it is, I just push the button until the subtitle I am looking for comes up. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | The problem with subtitles is that there can be more than one for one language.
Even for an american film with english subs I've seen 4 subtitle tracks:
The first one is for when people speak not English but the viewer is supposed to understand them. It's one of these subtitle tracks that get automatically enabled when you start the movie and you only notice them when a foreign language is spoken.
The second one is the standard subtitle track that spells out what people are saying.
The third one is the subtitle for the deaf and hard-of-hearding (SDH) where you get in addition to the text sound information such as *explosion off-screen* or *phone rings*
And the fourth is a trivia track
To properly profile them you need something more than just a "order number" dropdown to each language. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

I never understood why those have to be in correct order... So I wouldn't use this feature to see correct order (sorry force ) but I'd still like it for what Lewis & DJ Doena said - but there has to be an additional field for 'Commentary', 'SDH', 'Trivia' etc.

| Posted: | | | | Quoting TheMadMartian: Quote: I know I wouldn't. Just what I expected to hear (from an american). In how many movies do you need subtitles (in %)? To me this is 1000 times more useful info than who was the second Make-up Artist or if a studio name should be spelled 20th or twentieth. We are different people with different needs. |

Do you look to Profiler to see how many times you need to click to get the audio-track you want? No, but only because I don't have that info yet. That's why I'm suggesting it. Yes, I often look up a movie on DVD Profiler on my iphone before I watch it. What's weird about that ? |

No, but only because I don't have that info yet. That's why I'm suggesting it. Yes, I often look up a movie on DVD Profiler on my iphone before I watch it. What's weird about that ? Of course you have that information! Audio-tracks are in correct order... (as per rules)

| Posted: | | | | Sorry, I misread your post. (I was talking about subtitles.)
I'll try again:
No, I don't look up the Audio Tracks, because in 99,9% of the times I use the default (first) audio track. So subtitles in correct order is a waaaay more useful to me than Audio-tracks in correct order. | | | Last edited: by No-way |

No, and I don't understand the need either, so I am not sure what you are getting at here. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | In the case of audio tracks, each track needs to be matched with info about format. That means a check list won't work. For subtitles, we don't track anything but a one-word description, so a list of check boxes is fine. |

Just what I expected to hear (from an american). Of course because we Americans never purchase, or watch, films that use a language other than english. Quote: In how many movies do you need subtitles (in %)? You seem to be assuming that the only reason someone would use subtitles is because they don't understand the language. I have to tell you, that isn't the case. Since I spent most of my young life working around jet engines, I find myself using subtitles more often than I would like. Due to various reasons...background noise, whispering, etc...I often need to select the subtitles during different parts of a film. Each time, I will hit the sub button until I get the subtitles that I need, rewind, figure out the dialogue that I missed, then turn them back off. Since I might do this multiple times in a single film, where you probably do it once, at the beginning, I would guess that I do it as often as you do and I still know this is a feature I would never use. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | I might be mistaken, so anyone can feel free to correct me, but I seem to recall that the audio track rule was put in place to prevent ping-ponging of the order of audio tracks. One person wanted the AC3 listed first, then next DTS, etc... This is a problem we have never had with subtitles, since they have always been checkboxes.
On another note, the order in which subtitiles appear when you click through them on the remote, or the order listed in the menu, might not be that actual order they are encoded on the disc, since the software that presents the choices could be made to list them in different orders based on the region settings of the player. I don't know that this is the case, but it is possible. | | | Kevin |
