DVDP in reality is a piece of software for collectors of media that contain movie films, tv shows etc. I would think most collectors would eventually physically store their collection based on criteria that seems right to them. I don't think people would stick to organising their physical collection in strictly a 0-9,A-Z format. You'd find collectors that have their DVD's over in one place, blu-ray in another, or they may separate their box sets from the others or divide tv shows from their movies or may even sort their physical collection by genre.

What I am saying, is that every collector would have their own preference to how they store their collections physically. What I would like to see is for DVDP to be able to support this physical idea in the software. The best way to do this is categories. However, currently if you do organise your software collection by categories, then only the ones in the predetermined categories (main/wishlist/ordered) are the only ones that are added to your online list.

I would like to see DVDP change the category selection so you have the option to have these categories included with the main collection. In the best scenario I think your should have the main database which includes all categories as subsets of this database with the ability to be able to select which ones are included in the complete list (online list).

Ok, I know you can tag and do various searches to show what you have under a specific genre, type, well pretty much anything you want really. But this is only really temporary. I would like something more permanent so i can spilt my collection up just like I want to split it up in the colllection's physical location.

I don't think this would be such a big problem to include in DVDP because it already has the ability to include different categories into the complete list. All we really need is to be able to add user created categories also to that list - maybe with a check box so there's still a choice whether to include it or not.

So, anyway, as I said, DVDP really is collector's software. I just hope DVDP can be enhanced to support the idiosyncrasies of different collectors into how they like organising their collections.

Wouldn't this request belong here?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Hmm.. ok.. I messed up a bit with ambiguity over collections and categories. I basically want other user defined collections to have the ability to be added to the 'all' collection and thus also the online list.

No, it's not a website feature, but a feature within DVDP itself.

I thought they already were by ticking the "include in owned" check box.  i have custom categories...Blu-ray, DVD, TV on DVD, Animation...and they are all included in my online list because I ticked that box.  If that isn't what you are after, I must not understand your request.

It seems you are mixing things up here.

The content of the Custom Categories does already show up in the "All"-tab and can show up in the "Owned"-tab (provided you flag the correct option) as pointed out by TheMadMartian.

What doesn't show up in the online list are the categories themselves.

The thread I linked to will collect feature-requests for the Coming Soon (™) relaunch of DVDProfiler's online component (i.e. online list), so your request would fit there perfectly.

Yes, and so it does end up as both of you have stated. What I am asking for is something with a little bit more variety - an expansion of the categories.

I think it could be organised better, I don't really need an "Owned" category because there is an "All" category (for example). I would just see a situation where there is an "All" category, and the rest are like sub-categories which are selectable by the user. Each sub-category could have an alias name (as they would need system names so DVDP could properly recognise them) so you could call them DVD or Movie or Blu-ray or TV whatever, without being forced to have the existing Owned/Wishlist/Ordered forced upon you. Each category would have (like it does now) a button so they can be added to the "ALL" category or not (and thus also to one's online collection), but I would also prefer to have each category to have it's own collection numbers for the media it includes, if possible.

So what I am saying is to expand what's available in the collection categories to give more options to the end user. I am trying to ask for this without being so bold as to say to do it a specific way as I think everyone would have a different idea to how they would like their own collection categories setup. So this is what I am asking for - something that is more varied and configurable for the end user.

Edit: PS. The online I am not too worried about, other then realising that your collection needs to be there so you can vote on existing, add or modify your dvd's etc.

???

So if you don't care for the online component I don't understand your request at all.

It is already possible to hide the three basic categories (Owned, Ordered, Wishlist), so there is nothing that is forced upon you if you don't need them.

You are totally free to enter as many custom categories as you need and in addition you could give them any name you want without even having to care if DVDProfiler recognises these.

What I personally would like to hide is the "ALL" category. I never use it at all... it just takes up space on the bar. While you can hide the Owned, Ordered and Wish List... I found no way to hide the All tab from view.

I find it useful when trying to clean up name variants for cast/crew.

I personally haven't found it useful for anything at all. It seems very strange to me that you can hide any of the tags except the ALL tag.

Count me in as not understanding as well as I was under the impression that we could already do all that is being requested.

Like Pete, I have no real use for the 'All' category so, while it is useful for you, it would be nice if those of us who find it useless could hide it.

Right Click on a Category Tab (Own, Ordered, Wish List, etc.)... Go to Other... and click on Edit Collection Categories.

There is a section there that says Hide built-in categories... there you can hide either Owned, Ordered or Wish List. But for some reason you can't hide All.

Ok, I didn't know you could hide the default categories - wow, I don't believe I didn't see that before

Guess that solves half the issue.

No, there are a maximum of 10 custom categories, I know because I reached that and couldn't add any more
