I never had that many films on VHS, just over a hundred tapes I think. Most of them contained home made copies from laserdisc anyway so eventually I just threw them away when I had everything I wanted on DVD. The few originals I had I sold as one cheap bundle.

I do the same. For shows I once recorded but now never watch again, those tapes will end up in the trashbin.

I haven't thrown them all out ... I still have 13 that I can't replace on DVD.  I'd replace them if I could. 

As for the rest of them, I gave a large chunk to a friend (as well as the cabinet) and traded the rest in before they were completely worthless.

Like most of you, I still have a handful of VHS that aren't replaceable. I have hopes for some of them still, but the majority will likely never see a release. A few were taped off TV and most of those I've converted to DVD but kept the original just in case. I'd definitely upgrade if there was an option available, though.

I remember in the beginning how nice it was when I replaced one with DVD as it opened up a ton of space in my limited space-for every one tape, I could fit 2 DVDs, sometimes 3 if it was a clamshell type of case!

I rented one movie on VCR and the quality was so bad I never rented another. Plus I did not want to transfer the possible dirt from a rental tape to my SVCRs.

I did tape Laser Discs I rented because in those days the only place that had a good selection was across town and the return delay was such that ran two SVCR, quality as good as laser disc, to copy them so I would have weeks viewing. Besides in those days I was still working and didn't have the time to drive across town a several times a week. If I liked movie I would order it. I still have a large collection of Laser discs.
I should have gotten rid of some of them, but many have some very nice books with them.

But I have a large number of Great Courses, The teaching Company on tape.
I started collecting them as soon as they started the company from an add I saw in The Smithsonian. 
I purchased a Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo to save some of my lecture courses that are no longer available.

In moving stuff around as part of painting & flooring my little castle I found a bunch of stuff I should have gotten rid of hi-fi equipment, etc. example the first HP color printer, I think it cost about $900.00, Hey, I was working in those days. Maybe I ought to start a museum.

Until recently I had about 5 in the attic waiting for the DVD. Since then WB have released a couple in the Archive collection.

Couldn't find anyone interested, so I chucked about 600 commersial tapes and a couple of hundred recorded from TV or Laserdisc in the garbage container. Haven't gotten around to chucking the VHS player yet.
