This just tells me that you don't know anything about Windows or you are stupid. Propably both. You mean, that you think you know what's happening in you computer. I've been working as a sysadmin in an environment with +5000 computers and +20000 users almost ten years and I KNOW how easy it is to get in, IFF user is using his/her computer with admin rights.  No firewall, viruscanner etc. provide full security then. They are meaningless.

With windows ACLs and NTFS came along with NT 1997. Different story with *nix OSs, but I assume we are talking about Windows, since it's the only PC platform for DVDProfiler.

Hi Guys,

Minor update, from Rico!

Being curious as to what Skip posted, I searched the online DB and found the two titles. And added them, then deleted Scoop & Pirates the two that would not update.

Any thoughts as to why those two would not update, and yet were in the DB?

Hi Messrs Kulju, Rifter - A program that offers middle ground to both, might be 'Drop Your Rights.' Also my 2 cents, allot depends on:

1. Surfing habits - are you a high risk net user
2. defense mechanisms active, passive defense (spyblaster etc), on demand.
3. Hips
4. Also surfing can be made quite safe with apps like Sandboxie

Hello Kulju,

I'll assume your asking, what are hips. Hips = host intrusion protection system. Examples

Process Guard
System Safety Monitor
Prevx, OnlineArmour, Eeye, (community based)

Note. I've missed many, but i'm in a rush, swing shift today.

A very friendly nice forum for computer security is: wilderssecurity.com

Also before I forget again: Special Thank You to Skip, for your generous offer of help!

Contributing profiles and images, from a security perspective, is no different from visiting this website.  The only connection made is between your machine and our server, just as it is now as you read this message.  DVD Profiler makes similar connections when downloading profiles and images.

The only 100% secure way to ensure you are safe is to unplug your computer, and I bet the script kiddies are working on a way to infect you then too.

Keep your Windows updates current and run a decent virus scanner, and never choose to run an executable without considering the source, and you should be fine.

As mentioned above, plugins are programs.  You must choose to trust the source of the plugin just as you would when downloading an application elsewhere.

You know now that I'm reading this I have to remind myself that in the five odd years I have been using these programs (IVS/ Invelos) .., I have NEVER Ever had a problem with spyware or a virus in downloading any material from Ken's Site (s).,  Thanks Ken .
Can I ask exactly what precautions you use in protecting us all??.
( I even got hit with some heavy duty spyware the other day when I visited Photobucket . )

Keep your personal remarks to yourself, mister.  Anybody who think running proper virus detectors, firewalls, etc., isn't working with a full deck if you ask me.  I don't care how many computers you manage.  Nobody, even you, is going to stop a professional hacker.  But 99.999% of those who are trying to hack Joe Nobody's Windows PC are not professionals, so if they run up-to-date virus scanning, and both hardware and software firewalls, and anti-spyware programs, and pay attention to what is going on on their systems, they don't have to worry about getting hacked.

Is ther a word missing from this sentence? If you mean that if you are running proper firewall, virus scanners etc. you are safe to run our computer with admin-rights you confirm my thoughts that you don't know anything about how Windows works.

That was just to put things in perspective that I may know what I'm talking about. I know statistics from that environment users working with user rights vs. admin rights. Virus scanners and firewalls are not even close to priority compared to keeping your OS up to date and using your computer with no admin-rights.

But it is really easy if computer is used with admin rights. Why are you arguing against the the ground stone of computer security? You still didn't answer to my question how does it limit your computer use if you are logged in with normal user rights?

I never found real limitations using my computer with User rights. It felt odd for a while not being able to change date and time, but that could be tweaked easily. Program installation can even be done without logging out, using the Run As feature...

I found it "important" though to start this after a fresh install. Switching to User, after having used it as Admin for a while, is really making it difficult...

Come on, get serious.  You and I both know the average user has about as much technical knowledge as a chimpanzee.  You may, and probably do, know a lot more than I do about enterprise level networks, but that environment and my 3 PC home network are completely different animals and require different methods for proper functioning.  Rigs like yours are automatic targets; I'm pretty anonymous and not worth the effort of anybody but some punk teenager who is a Kevin Mitnik wanna-be.

Nobody, even you, is going to stop a professional hacker.

As Achim noted, there are too many restrictions placed on the user level.  Between the so-called enhancements that Microsoft likes to make (without bothering to ask anybody) that make restrictions the default, and requirements I have for some of the things I do, anything less than full admin rights means I'm spinning my wheels on even the most routine things.  Ultimately, though, it is MY computer, and I should have the right to utilize it any way I see fit to and Microsoft be damned!

Exactly my point. "Run as" is the key for secure computing. There are some old programs that are a bit tricky to make work with user-rights, but user with some knowledge about ACLs can handle them with a little work. I personally haven't found anything that requires using computer logged in with admin-rights...If you know what you are doing. With gpedit.msc you can basically do everything (don't know if that comes with XP home, but it is a part of XP Professional). I make my living by configuring difficult science measurement environments to work with user rights

I thought I said that there are not too many restrictions... I merely mentioned the one restriction I found somewhat odd, being unable to change time and date. Everything else works great (been doing that for 17 months now and still happy with it).

Exactly my point, thats why one should never use computer with admin-rights! There are only two points:
a) you don't have technical knowledge --> don't use with admin rights
b)you have technical knowledge --> you are wise enough to not use with admin rights. If you still do, see a).

There are no difference if you have 3 or 3000 cmputers. Basic pricipals are still the same.

Ultimately it is my thumb and it is my right to hit it with a hammer if I like, but that's not too smart eather. Of course you can use your computer logged in with admin-rights, but that's just stupid. Please continue to do so, but don't recommend that to any other user.

Start Command Prompt with "Run As..."
Commands are "time" and "date" without "-marks
