-Gerri Unfortunately? Are you not allowed to work as a programmer for your husband then? Or is it because you do not understand the programming language he uses? | | | Martin Zuidervliet

| Posted: | | | | I didn't really mean that there are too many tight wads. Just that with 4 young kids, we still need insurance and assurances and some of the other things that a full time job in corporate america brings. None of my kids are even in high school yet, lots of stuff to worry about . I dont think I could work for Ken anyways He would code circles around me | | | Invelos Software, Inc. Also programing I am told takes a long time and even longer when you are doing it yourself or with just one or 2 other people. Actually, doing the programming is the easier part of the job. What is really time consuming and stressful is testing and debugging new code. No matter how good you are at it, as soon as you turn it loose to users, they will break it because you can't possibly come up with every little weird way the users will try to do things with it. That is why it takes years sometimes for a good piece of software to get a major upgrade, such as from version 2 to version 3, etc. | | | John

| Posted: | | | | As a programmer myself, I heard many many times that there is no such thing as a bug-free program.
I have to disagree. I came up with a program (in BASIC no less!) that does exactly what it is intended to do and no user can ever break it.

| Posted: | | | | Paul is right on there. I was told to come up with a dialog box informing sales users that document updates were being downloaded to their computer and to please wait. Remembering my own saying that you need to code to the lowest common denominator (and sales can get pretty damn low), I went through great efforts to come up with a paragraph that was clear, concise, and informative.
A few days after the code was deployed, I was told that the users were getting confused, to make it simpler. I spent a couple hours trying to condense it down even more and yet still remain clear.
A few days after the code was deployed, I was told that the users were still getting confused and to change the text to "PLEASE WAIT". |

| Posted: | | | | Just remember another one. An old co-worker of mine had this co-worker at a previous job that kept asking him what she needed to do at each stage of the program, even though it was clear to anyone with an IQ higher than an eggplant what button you need to push since there was only one and it was labeled "Continue".
So he changed the screen so the button was in the center with four large blinking red arrows in each corner pointing to it.
She asked him "What do I do here?" | | | Last edited: by Dr. Killpatient |
