I run optical audio to my reciever just fine using the PS3.
Then you're getting a downmix, and not lossless sound. True HD is only via HDMI, but I understand optical is still o.k. for 5.1 (DTS or DD)...? Yes, but not for Dolby Digital Plus and DTS HD, but you still get a downmix. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

| Posted: | | | | I said the PS3 wasn't the "optimal solution" if you're using optical or coax for audio. By "optimal" I meant that you'd have full functionality (TrueHD, DD+ included) over optical. Over optical the PS3 does a downmix for the HD audio formats. You'll still get sound, but you won't be getting half of the HD experience. Ergo, not optimal. | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |

| Posted: | | | | Giga Wizard posted a Dutch article in the topic ` Blu-Ray neemt grote voorsprong op HD-DVD in Nederland (Dutch article)`. I translated this failry roughly but confirms what is written here, only specific for the Dutch, and maybe the Belgium market (a reference was made to the Benelux). So in short, Quote:
Blu-ray takes the lead in The Netherlands.
According to the sales numbers Blu-ray has taken the lead in The Netherlands. In 2007 ~75,000 HD disc were sold, over this year Blu-ray disc had a marketshare of 81 percent. BRD sales grossed around 1,800,000 euro where HD DVD only grossed 400,000 according to numbers from the NVPI.
These numbers are about the sales before Warner announced their BRD exclusitivity. In The Netherlands there were as much Blu-rays as HD DVDs available last year, about 50:50. Warner had the biggest share in HD DVD sales. Rest of the info is about music sales and SD DVD sales. | | | Jean-Paul |

Excuse me while I yawn and pretend to be really impressed... | | | Last edited: by marcelb7 |

| Posted: | | | | Well no need to be impressed, but furthermore reason for HD DVD o lie down and just wither away or be impressed? At least it is comparing apples and oranges | | | Jean-Paul | | | Last edited: by Zoeper |

Not really a downmix, for TrueHD and DD+ it just sends the "core" DD 640kbps, for DTS HD it sends the 1.5mbps DTS core, and for Multichannel PCM it does a 2channel PCM downmix. By comparison the 360 HD DVD player decodes TrueHD to PCM and then reencodes to DTS or DD or 2channel PCM depending on your settings, many of the toshiba standalones do the same. I have no idea what Blu Ray standalones do, they seem to do whatever they want when it comes to sound formats. | | | Last edited: by stefc |
