Tags alone will not do, imho, because if i want to select ex. all dvd's i'll have all the laserdiscs in the list too (assuming i have registered laserdiscs as dvd ... same thing for BD or hddvd).

I think you're wrong here. What you could do is tag your laserdiscs as "laserdisc" and your "real" DVDs as DVD. Then you can select either of the two groups. Tags work independently from the programs own identification of profiles as either DVD, Blue Ray or HD DVD, that's the point here. So I think you might find there's more you can do with tags than you might think!

you would actually just need a tag for each not supported format (in this case just laserdiscs) because the filtering on tags uses a 3 state check box. so checked would be just laserdiscs, unchecked would be just dvd, and the 'greyed' the default state, would be both. Then apply any additional filters for media type (to eliminate blu-ray or hd-dvd) and viola. you could also put a tag for VHS/Beta/Reel if you want, you just then need to pay attention to the And/Or check box when filtering on tags for these

Ok it works.
Now i have a small problem: some of my PAL discs do not have an EAN so the program don't let me insert any of these titles. I've tried some numbers (ex 0000000000) but it don't work.
Is there any workaround for this?

Use "Add Inserted disc" feature using Disc ID.

Most Laserdiscs won't fit in my DVD player.

With other media forms , you can't Contribute the data th o the Online any way, so you can do whatever you want, even make up UPC #'s. I repeat they are not CONTRIBUTABLE, even with a valid UPC #., any that are discovered have been removed in the past and will be in the future.

What you could do to save you some time is if some of your laserdiscs have been released on DVD then you could download those profiles and adapt them to suit your own disc. Quicker than typing it all in from scratch! Just remember not to contribute them.

What do you do with these things, I put one on my turntable and it just made a mess.  How old are they, are they pre 8-track?

No, you stick it on your finger, hold it up to the light, then spin it really fast...

It's best to use a manual profile for those instead of a faked UPC - if you do a mass update of your profiles, those will generate a download error or even worse, download another profile and replace yours.

Why not setup a separate data base for LDs.
I always use separate db when testing new versions of the profiler.
You have remember to keep backups (names) separate.
You could modify a layout to suit you and save that under a different name

I also have several hundred laserdiscs and would like to add them to my collection.  I tried the LDDB.com site and it is OK, but not as comprehensive as the DVDProfiler.  You might wonder why anyone would want to keep them.  In many cases, there are no DVDs to match, the latest upcoversion to 1080p on the discs is great, and the sound is also great.  By the way a quick check on E-Bay will show more than 3,000 hits, and many of these are for complete collections.  I found on site that had 9,000 in stock.

It seems to me that the data base elements, in most cases are the same as with DVD - cast, crew, description, soundtracks, etc. and few that are different.  The cover art is square and would need to be scanned in (probably with a camera and not a scanner) so the thumbnail would have a different aspect ratio.  There are a few other fields such as type (CLV vs CAT), and there may be several discs since each side is about 30 min.

If I had a copy of the data base elements, I could review them and compare them to my laserdiscs and the laserdisc data base to see what we would need.

To summarize, if we were to have a new media type beyond (DVD, HDDVD, BlueRay) and a few select data elements that are unique, it might work.

If not, then the "manual" process is all we have.  I think the suggestion of creating a DVD record for the equivalent laserdisc, but then changing it to "manual" might be the most efficient way to fill all of the data fields in the record.  Then I would go back and change the ones that do not apply or are different on the laserdisc.  Obviously the cover art, front and back, would be different.  I would also have look thru any new data elements, like number of discs, disc type, manufacturer, language, etc.

Anyone willing to work on this?

At the risk of being repetitive.

Dick:
To be precise this is an EIGHT year old request, maybe 9. The short answer as far as Profiler is concerned is this is DVDProfiler, NOT LaserProfiler, TapeProfiler or for those that may have a few FilmProfiler. Of course, there are ways for it to be made to work, through the tag System abd so forth but such things are purely personal and NEVER Contributable. This question like so many other periodically recycles and is made by many new users...including this one...way back when.

Hi Dick,

I don't have any laserdiscs myself, so sorry, I can't help you there. However you might find this helpful if you start from an existing DVD profile for the movies you have on LD.

Of course this will be of no use if there is no DVD release to begin with, however in some cases there is no US release but there are DVD releases in other localities. To trace those, in DVDP choose "Add DVD" (the green plus button), go to the Add by Title tab, choose Any Region, Any Locality and Any Release and type the title you're looking for. Also try the Original Title if it's a foreign film (e.g. Der Untergang rather than The Downfall). And tick the Full Substring Filter and Include No Region boxes. If you find a match, download it and start editing the profile until it matches your LD. If there are several matches, use the Preview button to find the most complete profile.

You could either tag your LDs or put them in a different collection within DVDP. And, as others have said, you can't contribute them to the central database.

Good luck,
DJ
