Really? it doesn't matter - eventually I would have a blu ray PC drive - and then I could read any region blu ray disc - so this pointless action by CRiterion will do nothing but inconvenience people.. | | | | Paul |

Criterion has to license the movie rights from the owning studio, and their contract strictly specifies that they are allowed to market it on north America alone.
Some studios also write it explicitly on the licensing contract that the resulting DVD must be geographically coded. In those situations Criterion has no other choice than to region code it. Whenever the licensing studio doesn't specifically includes the region coding of the resultant DVD on the contract, Criterion "forgets" to put the coding. It is a known practice by them and it will still be abiding by the contract as it will market it in north America alone (not their fault that so many stores will sell them to costumers abroad afterward).
Of course every major studio knows this course of action, and when they "forget" to specifically demand region coding they know that Criterion will in turn know that's the sign to "forget" it as well.
And, let's face it, Criterion's market share is a tiny one (Joe Sixpack doesn't make a faintest idea what a 'Criterion DVD' is), so, major studios could "forget" it most of the times.
However, due to those licensing constraints, and in order not to make any future licensings harder, Criterion keeps the official statement that All DVDs are Region 1 and all Blu-Rays are Region A.
But I'd almost bet that the Blu-Ray coding policy will be the same as the DVD one. Officially one thing, but on practice, whenever possible, a different one.
