So far no one answered my question and my concerns. I am not necessarily picking this particular Genre request. Where does it end and are we supposed to start accounting foir EVERY possibility from Every user that comes down the pike, thus winding up with a total mess at some point, along with data that would be argued incessantly, There comes a point where enough is enough, where is it. Evereybody can rationalize therir facorite choice a Genre just as you did but, do you want to have to dig through 1000 possibilities (which would be all to eay to achieve). As for the fields mentioned, you will NEVER have enough to satisfy everybody, if Ken gave us 10 fields someone would want 11. At some point....
Skip Why does it need to end Skip? As long as good genres are proposed they should be considered on an individual basis. The silly ones will fall ("Red headed protaganist"movies won't get much support) and the good ones that people support should be approved. Your suggestion that it would hit 1000 is extreme. I'm a pretty creative guy and past 50 or so I'd be down to "left handed love interest movies". There are holes in the genre list at the moment and it does't take a lot of additions to get much better coverage than we have now. Like the Disaster genre in the beta. That' a big win that covers a good 100 films in my collection. And no existing tags really suffice to cover that gap. The same thing applies to Surreal. If you don't want options, then don't ask for them or use them. But don't drag us down with ya. |

| Posted: | | | | I'm all for adding as many genres as users want, the more the merrier...as long as those contributable remain the top three. I don't want to have to sort through a laundry list of genres in a profile contribution . | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection | | | Last edited: by Bad Father |

| Posted: | | | | now that we have custom genres I personally don't care if any more get added to the program itself... I am more then happy using custom genres... I just wish we didn't have the limit of 5 genres per profile. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | 1000...extreme, snark? Have you looked at what some others have for genre, in some cases they have folded Genre into a mysterious extra category called keywords, which is nightmarish. I am all for users being able to do what they wish, locally, that is called the tags, even though it does have limitations. i, for one, don't want to burdened an infinite selection of possible genres and the attendant discussioins here over what is or is not correct. For example, Surreal, could also be called Bizarre, and God help us if both were added to the list. I think David Lynch's work typically fits into Bizzarre quite nicely, the man as a director is pretty warped. What you are looking at essentially is a LOCAL choice, YOU(generic) want something which to YOU seems to be a valid choice, but to others it results in adding an unwanted burden of extra data that they have to plow through, and God help us if it were Contributable data. Thius is one of those areas where no one is ever going to be perfectly happy, there are those that want MORE, there are those like 8Ball who want more AND less Someone is ALWAYS goinng to find, in some cases ONE SINGLE film that matches aparticular Genre they want to include and worse they may well be the ONLY user in possession of said film, but they will moan about wanting THAT genre included...just for them. As I said our list is close to perfect right now, I would not have added Disaster to the list since for Contribution most of those fall quite nicely under Drama. Remember that the LIST be it Genre, Countries or Languages, those lists are based on Contributable data, and I, for one don't want to even 100 possible genres selections. Take for example the Genre of Sports That could be subdivided into Baseball Football Teams Super Bowl Follies Soccer(Futbol) Hockey Basketball Field Hockey Fencing Badminton Tennis Swimming Synchronized Swimming Bicycle Racing etc etc etc Sports ALONE could probably reach 50-100 possibles. NO THANJ YOU. If I want to do that I will handle the matter locally, I don't want it forced upon me and then have to argue over what is or isn't. The whole thing gives me a headache, I'll take two aspirin a call you in the morning. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

When do you say STOP?! As I see it, I don't HAVE to ask for more fields or more data possibilities. I can already do whatever i want in that regard, I can have just as much genre data as I wish to have there is NO limit on me whatsoever and i don't have to come here and ask to add Dramedy. | Posted: | | | | In that particular area... I don't have a number to say stop. To me personally I can see times where I could use 10... but that would be few and far between.
Something like this.... I would personally say since it is a local only field (custom genres don't get uploaded) why have a limit? Let anyone do whatever they want locally... so if it was me... I personally would have it set up so people could add all the custom genres they want to. I would leave main profile genres at 3 though of course. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | I already have all of that capability, Pete, all i have to do is use my tags. They are filterable, I can even print out a report of the results if I wish.<shrugs>

| Posted: | | | | Like I said Skip... I personally don't want to have to look 2 places for the same information. As I said I know this can be done with tags... but that don't mean that tags is the best solution for it.
The 2 of us are looking at this for 2 different point of views. But I see no reason not to have something like I asked for when it concerns local only... it is not like it will even effect you unless you decide to use it. So why do you seem to have something against it? | | | Pete |

Skip Your examples are rediculously contrived to an extreme because you're set on opposing new genres. No one has requested any of those things. Why not comment on the actual worth of the request rather than whacking at straw men? Especially ones contrived by subdividing an already sufficient category into trivial suib-genres. If you like tags, then good for you. But they aren't a viable alternative for extra genres so don't keep banging that drum. You're completely ignoring the function of genre within the application. | | | Last edited: by Snark |

| Posted: | | | | No more than you are absolutely ignoring my concern that I have no desire to be saddled with a list of hundreds of genre, simply because you want them, Snark. The ONLY viable option would be to make the Custom fields, which we still don't know how many is enough. Be filled in by the user in addition to being completely local.
As tro this specific Genrte, i think Surreal is more of a SUB-Genre than it isd a main Genre. Why because it is secondary to the FACT that most Surreal would be listed in Drama, though i can think of a few Comedies and Sci_Fi which would fit, in other words it is NOT a primary genre.

| Posted: | | | | Wow, this seems to be a really hot topic. While I think there are a few genres that should be added, such as an exercise genre for my workout DVD's, I agree with Skip, we don't need 100 genres to make our point. Look at how nitpicky it becomes; Horror, Vampires, Cults, Lions and Tigers and Bears. Next we'll differentiate between adult and porn or cartoons and cartoons not fit for children. The list could go on and on. I think we need to figure out a list that MOST of us can be reasonable and agree on. I think Ken has done a FANTASTIC, yes fantastic job with this issue. Lets not reinvent the wheel because we really don't need to. |

Lets not reinvent the wheel because we really don't need to. Just to be clear... I never asked for the horror sub-genres I use to be added to the list. I don;t believe they should... I am even happy if Ken never adds another genre to the main list. I was just using the horror sub-genres with how I use them as an example for why I feel we need more genre spots per profile. I believe they should all be local only... just don't think they should be limited to only 5 genres. I think for local use you should be able to put all the custom genres you want to a profile. | | | Pete |

And here you have the exact reason why I don't contribute anymore and don't care about the database. Adult doesn't equal pornography, the genre "adult" doesn't exist and means absolutly nothing. Not the first time that I say that, but it's always a lost of my time to discuss this. |
