I have been trying to make sense of the topics in this forum, and it's nearly impossible to separate the wheat from the chaff, what with all the "he said" and "no, didn't" and "I don't like your attitude" commentary cluttering up the works -- and I accept responsibility for some of it. Perhaps a rule that I have seen work well in other venues could be made here. The rule was simple "No meta-discussion." Anyone making any sort of meta-comment would be warned once, then barred for a period of time on a second offense.

A meta-comment was anything about the discussion itself, or about any other appender, or ... you get the idea, I think. It really did work, keeping the discussion pretty much on track. If anyone thinks that might be useful, I could see if I can find more details. This Wikipedia article may be of use.

Do you often have these difficulties distinguishing suggestion from reality?

Of course, in a more sinister vein, if you refer to it in the way that you did, it becomes easier to later refer to it as a demand. Such distortions are a type of fallacy, an old debater's trick. The Greeks had a name for it that I have forgotten.

Don't hold your breath.  As you were told in another thread, this is just how these forums work.  They were like this when I joined, some 8+ years ago, and they will probably be like this long after I am gone.

I know you don't like it, but it works for us...you either adapt or you go extinct.
