The best solution would be if it could be updated on a need-to basis.

For example. Someone asks for Iran and Ken edits some database table, adds Iran and with the next "Refresh Online Profile List" Iran becomes available as CoO for everyone. This way there'd be no need do add all 266+x countries but simply the ones someone has asked for. I believe this way the list would remain easily below 100 countries.

That's exactly how it is currently done. The source for CoO is the same as for localities: the file localities.xod. The file gets updated when the online profile list is updated.

If we leave the COO blank when we have a country that's not in the list, we have no way to know if the field is blank because we've determined it to be a non-listed country or if we haven't determined the proper COO at all!

And you can not wach in graphics stats.

I can honestly say the majority of the films I own come from 4 or 5 countries and of those the majority come from the United States.

Think how important is USA's cinema, and in my case, USA's titles, are less of 40%. I have 8 countryes with more than 20 films, and films of now identificated by dvdprofiler 26 countrys, many of them with 5 or more titles. Not all people wach the same cinema type, and not all people must work than only one cinema type is usuall.

It is only logical that Ken chose the countries which appeared most when he built the country list.

Is logical Ken starts like these. But when are needs, is logical upgrade or whe no went to update audio formats when BluRay Starts.

Things star one form, but why no can they go up?

Ken has been more than intelligent when putting this program together.

Ken starts he best can do. These not be no cam be doing things better. The important is going learning and do I+D.

I did look at it logically. Your logic is just different. Your logic is that "too many" equals "bad".

They think too many must be equal to more dificult to find they used few countries, and that is false. Is the only problem in these. And if will be a problem, that is very dificult with type-search, the interface will be improved and problem must be not exits. I think can be made easy with more used custonabilizable country system.

I will guarantee that all 266 do not produce and probably never have produced a film

But most of them yet do someone.

With some control. Think if someone type bad a country mane, of try to put a local country. Think someone contribuited catalanoian, galician, basque country... In USA's people start contribuiting California...

The Province of Quebec is already in the list of COO and the last time I've check we are not a country yet. But our cinema industry is a big one and we have produced many classics if you can pass the fact that our movies are french. Never check but : Are we the only country in the COO list that are not a country?

Yes, this is true and he has evolved the list thus far and he is continuing to do so.  It doesn't mean he needs to add every country that has ever existed.

As I stated Ken is evolving the program AS NEEDED.

Um, no most of the 266 countries have NOT produced a cinema released film.

Perhaps Ken could allow for a non-contributable custom field like he has done for crew.

Please no! There is absolutely no problem with adding every country which makes movies to the list of contributable countries. If I have understood Ken correctly, adding a country is even possible without releasing a new version of the program.

The only big advantage of DVD Profiler to  every other database solution is, that we don't have to enter most of the data for our databases ourselves. I'm absolutely not interested in non contributable genres, crew roles etc.

If I have to enter the data myself, I will use a database program and not DVD Profiler.

This is an artefact of the way the list of countries is implemented. Both localities and country of origin share the same list of countries. IMO Quebec should not be use as a country of origin.

Cool then we can get down to 46 countries.  Sweet I vote for this as well, remove Quebec.  Although I have many Quebecois friends who will dislike this as they believe Quebec is its own country.

Never made my comment in a way to ask the removal of it. For one, I will be really pissed off by a removal since the cinema industry in our province is much more healty than the one in the ROC. A removal will just be my last update of DVDP, I can easilly live with what I've in my hand right now and I can use the sofware without the database and its online part (did it for the most part last year and it was not a big deal).

You put important question. Someones must like solve all with tags, but tags are not contribuible. Every one must do the same work at home because that.

All contriuble and not personal things, the logical is must be contribuible for people must not do twice the work and can work in more things contribuible for improve the datafile.

We can be agree or not with a legal situation of one place, but we must respect. The healty, the special personality of a cinema of one country is must not reference for made a country. If we do with one, why no do with other, like Hollywood? Basque cinema will be no spanish country? Bombay cinema will be diferenciate of NuevaDelhi cinema?

You not request a renoval, but you put in evidence a bug in datasystem. Is your are orgulls of your country, and you like filter by them, is easy with tags. But that is a personal data no database logical contribuible data.

Be that as it may, Quebec should never be listed as a CoO as it is not a country.  Region, yes.  Country, no.  Anybody entering it as such is exploiting a bug in the program in order to enter their personal preference.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I agree, Unicus. Somebody please tell me we aren't going to start arguing over FIFTY states being added because of this oversight.

Who had said that I'm arguing or that I use it when I make a contribution. I think I know it's not a country, I NFBSK live there... I just find stupid to remove something that are already there, nothing more nothing less. I agree completly with the comment made by Rho (I already use it for my personal database) and this isn't the reason for my first reply.

For the arguing we always had the name variations or some other frivolities available
