How are you suggesting this would display Online. based on what I am reading, the data would not match the credit and therefore is not consistent with the Rulkes or the intent to be representative of the ACTUAL credits.

I still think the single name field with the rules of entering the names exactly as they are in the credits (exactly as they are read for non-western alphabet) would be the best bet. This would stop all parsing problems and will work for all names... as was already brought up that this tick box will not do.

With a single name field, you cannot sort actors and crew by family name. The tick box I request for doesn't change anything for those who do not want to use it. It's just a tiny thing hidden in an edit window that can solve one problem, important for some of us, but of course it will not solve all the problems of an online database which has no consistency at all for names. To solve that, Ken would have  to modify his program and database, and I'm not sure he is ready to do that, and I'm even not sure that this would have any interest. The most important is to allow all users to manage their local as they wish.

"Cow Yun-Fat" with "Chow" in the last name field and "Yun-Fat" in the first name field and the reverse name check box checked.

True, as long as it is local.

The simple addition of a "Sort By" field woud fix that. So instead of three name fields as we have now, we have two:

Name: Chow Yun-Fat
Sort As: Chow, Yun-Fat

Name: Tom Cruise
Sort As: Cruise, Tom

Name: Helena Bonham Carter
Sort As: Bonham Carter, Helena

The entry of the sort name could even be semi-automated to put the last word found at the front followed by a comma. Sure some would have to be corrected, but most names would be fine.

Contributable or not ?

If Ken decided to add a tick box it would be up to him to decide if it is contributable or not.

We have Chow//Yun-Fat

If Ken decides the box is not contributable :

People who want correct asian name display have to change to Yun-Fat//Chow in their local and check the box. In the credits, it appears as Chow Yun-Fat, and in the names lists it is sorted, correctly, among the C.

For people who don't care, they do nothing. In the credits, it appears as Chow Yun-Fat, and in the names lists it is sorted, wrongly, among the Y. This is what we have now.

If Ken decides the box is  contributable :

People who know which is the family name put it in the last name field, and check the box. For every people downloading the profile,  it will appear as Chow Yun-Fat in the credits (as on screen), and it will be sorted correctly among the C in the names lists .

For people who do not want to bother with that, they enter as on screen, and do not check the box and contribute. Exactly as now. But people who care can correct the wrong information in their local, though it is not possible now.

Your solution will not avoid parsing problem :

Name: Helena Bonham Carter
Sort As: Bonham Carter, Helena

and

Name: Helena Bonham Carter
Sort As: Carter, Helena Bonham

and those two should not be linked as we cannot swear will never have  a John/Carter/Smith  and a John//Carter Smith

Now that I have read further clarifications, I have changed my mind as it solves nothing.  We will still have some people entering the name as 'Chow/ /Yun-Fat', and others entering it as 'Yun-Fat/ /Chow'.  The only difference is that the second group will have a check box to reverse the display.

That being the case, why do we need a check box?  Entering 'Yun-Fat/ /Chow [Chow Yun-Fat]' already achieves this goal...or am I missing something?
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I think you are missing two things:

- As rules are written, I know many people that will vote no on a contribution like Yun-Fat//Chow [Chow Yun-Fat] arguing that CLT says the contrary.

- When you have actors that play in many films, you change in a few seconds Chow//Yun-Fat to Yun-Fat//Chow with checked tick-box, and have much more work to take all movies and edit credited as at each time.

What I cannot understand  is that some users who are not interested in some request that will change nothing for them feel obliged to criticize it, not trying to see that it is important for others. For example, there is a request for option to view last contribution notes prior to accepting an updated profile. I do not even find the smallest interest in that request, but  I said nothing on this thread. If it is good for somebody else, I find normal that they ask it and Ken will decide.

If you do not want to use the tick box, nothing will change for you.  But for me, it is  very important, much more than bold and italics in overviews or reasons for ratings, or other requests for such futilities against which I never said anything...

I'm sure that on those forums we can find more than one hundred pages about asian names. There is a problem, and some people try to find solutions and suggest them to Ken via a forum that is made for that.  Those who prefer wrong information to correct one should not try to sabotage their efforts.

I completely agree, as i said numerous times before. But we keep repeating ourselves, this topic the asian names topic. Than those topics fade and eventually there'll be another day another topic, same arguments.

we allready have such a field -> it's called "as credited"-field.
The problem is, we are also forced to link the credit to a name in the DB regardless if the user know or not.
Just contributing the "as-credited" without the coercion linking to a person we wouldn't even need this checkbox surfeur request (good idea btw. ) and there would be much less discussion of parsing

I really agree with you on that. I've never understand why the request are even discuss and not lock automaticly... Ken miss a lot of usefull one because they are lost in multi page useless debate and, as the programmer, he is able to see what is and what isn't a good improvment for the profiler.

Probably because the OP may have not thought of something so getting opinions from other users is beneficial IMHO. As long as the post is constructive, ie not just saying "That's rubbish" then it's fine.
