We shoudl have a way of linking these is the program.

IMHO, we already have that, since the rules do NOT say to enter studios "as credited", but instead tell us to use "correct names" for studios. So there's the linking system: we just use the correct studio name regardless of minor variations seen on the screen. As far as I'm concerned, the prescribed-by-the-rules "correct name" for Twentieth Century-Fox is Twentieth Century Fox. Some of these known variations are already automatically corrected by Invelos filter (i.e. "20th Century Fox" becomes "Twentieth Century Fox"), but the rest we need to do by ourselves.

And here is the problem.  The rules ask for correct names.  IMHO, the correct name is the name in the credits.  Because studios can change their names whenever they want, going by the current name is just ridiculous.

In all fairness, that needs to be taken in context at the time it was written.  The Rules referred to "correct studio names" and then reffered people to the now "defunct" studios thread which was supposed to be the "standard name" that was to be used.  Which essentially means not to use "credited as".

Personally, I say enter it exactly as it appears on screen.  If you really want to see all films by 20th Century Fox and all its permutations, simply filter on all variations.

I thought I'd seen one for Warner Bros as well.

If I remember correctly Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer also.

Perhaps we need a "Credited as" system for Studios as well *ducks for cover*

The rules could easily said "as credited". But they explicitly don't.

Not entirely true, hal =, since i built that thread.

In the case of Fox i halisted all the various variants for them, just as I did for MGM, Universal and Paramount. Therefore BOTH Twentieth Century Fox and Twentieth century-Fox were listed, meaning you were to use the data that appeared ON SCREEN. You were not to list Twentieth Century fox in place of Twentieth Century-Fox. That hasn't changed. Nor should you list Metro-Golwyn Mayer pictures for metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

If memory serves, the original thread listed all 'correct' variations, not a single standard.

Agreed.  We already have enough areas of contention, why make this one harder than it has to be?  Just copy the film credits and be done with it.

The three auto-corrections we do at this time are:

"20th Century Fox Home Entertainment" becomes "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment",
"Warner Brothers" or "Warner Bros" becomes "Warner Bros.", and
"Metro Goldwyn Mayer" becomes "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer"

We do this not to standardize on particular studio names, but to correct some common errors.  The studios do enough fragmenting due to name changes without our help.

The first two I have no problem with, Ken.

The third one NO, that may be making a change from the ACTUAL credited studio. Which you know i oppose.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just keep piling up reasons for me not to Contribute, which Ken, i don't think is a good thing, You have no idea how many hundreds of titles I have here that are NOT in the database Online, just because of this kind of foolishness. I don't see that as a good thing, maybe you do.

Yes, that is correct.

However, my point is that the reference you quoted was pointing to a thread that was to be used to not enter studios "as credited", however, you were implying above that "use the correct studio" in the original context actually meant to use "as credited".  It did not.

I never liked or wanted the "studios" thread in the first place.
