I think that goes completely against the spirit of the original program that was started over a decade ago, and the developers need to take several steps back and reflect on what went wrong and how to fix it, even if it requires a major overhaul. Totally agree with that. Online profiles should be simple, with real data without any cosmetic feature as bold, italics or group dividers, with limited crew roles, so that an online profile can be a starting point for everybody. As it is now, it takes less time to build a new profile than to edit an online profile to match with one's own preferences. | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

That't a very good point and I think it's in that spirit that Ken posted a thread a while back, asking us what needed to be changed regarding the cast/crew system. A lot of good ideas were being kicked around and Ken took note of it. I imagine he's busy now trying to figure out how to translate those ideas and wishes into DVDP, both the program and the online. I'm not expecting it to be done within a year seeing how it's a big overhaul, but I think it's indeed a necessity if DVDP wants to keep it's appeal of the online DB in the long run. Maybe I'm naive, but I'm hopeful | | | Blu-ray collection DVD collection My Games My Trophies |

Huh. I think that's missing the point. My local is "perfect" for me in that I can personalize it the way I want it. Since no two people want exactly the same thing, the online has to be the common ground. I don't see why this would make it less appealing. But two things that would help with contributions: 1. Ability to select partial cast and crew for contribution (a check box toggle for each entry + toggle all). 2. "Credited As" for crew roles so everyone can see exactly why they were added. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 | | | Last edited: by Nexus the Sixth |

Mine is perfect because all the cast/crew are linked together and the names don't change every weeks wich is far to be the case for the online. Mine is perfect because adult movie are accepted in it without censorship wich isn't the case actually with the online. Mine is perfect because the cover actually shown is the cover of what I own and not one from something release 10 years before. Mine is perfect because the profiles are complete and reliable since I can't lie to myself wich is not the case with the online. I could go on longer, but I think I'm clear... | | | Last edited: by Jimmy S |

What went wrong? That's easy: Overcomplicated rules in combination with a non-existing jurisdiction on problematical cases. This results in everyone cooking his own soup. The basic rule for setting up a database is: Keep it simple. While the string in the background may be complicated as hell, the front-end has to be self-explanatory. As soon as you have to open guidelines that explain what has to be filled into the datafields the whole system is doomed to fail. This always has been and always will be correct for databases that are maintained by more than one user. The complete lack of data-consolidation only adds to the chaos. In this regard IMDb is not better or worse than "our" database, it has different faults, that's all. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?
