We have digged into this issue before and if I recall correctly there is no surround flag carried by the DTS 2.0 data stream that can be detected by software, unlike Dolby Digital 2.0 which can either be "stereo" or "surround" (or even 2-channel mono). Since there really is no compelling reason to make the distinction anyway, I have suggested that the program option should simply be labeled as "stereo/surround" to avoid this sort of unecessary complication. Sometimes I think we demand too much technical minutiae for our own good. I don't think that's 100% true. The DTS-HD Master and DTS-HD High Resolution formats have backwards compatible "Surround" Cores. Audio specs do not have to be confirmed by software, if you can confirm if with a home theater set-up. Many home theater set-ups can decode DTS-HD Master Audio and downmix to Pro-Logic decoding whether that stream is "Surround" or not...just like any other 2-channel audio source. I can of course force it to play stereo, doing a downmix if needed, but that doesn't tell me what the source actually is. Maybe you would be so kind to describe how you confirm that a DTS HD Master 2.0 track is enconded in surround or stereo? My Onkyo receiver will decode it if set to Dolby Pro-Logic II. Sometimes it shows these as regular 2.0, and sometimes as Surround. I've always noticed that matching what is displayed on either the release back cover or the disc menu. If it shows Surround on the package/disc, that's usually what it decodes as. It won't differentiate between 2.0 Mono and Stereo/Surround though, but that's the same with other formats. | | | | Corey |
