From the reports I heard that they set sail when they learned the intensity it would hit the coast.  They decided to set sail in an attempt to save the ship, but could not clear it in time.

At least that what was on some early news reports.

I live in Maryland. The worst of it past by us last night. Lots of wind and rain... and we lost electricity for about 7 hours.

Most of Buffalo came through quite well. The only problem I have is the basement got a little flooded - but that happens all the time with heavy rain.

There are approximately 500 people are without electricity and although there are lots of branches down we only lost a few trees.

The biggest local news stories are the cancelled flights - a friend of mine is stuck in Russia - and the people surfing the waves on Lake Erie.

It has been labeled as the storm of the century (but isn't that a bit early with still 88 years to go?) and by now I've seen the TV news reports ans internet news sites with some of the damages caused. Yes, it is news in the Netherlands too. Horrible for any one to have damage inflicted on their properties or worse, injuries or fatalities with loved ones.

But that said, living in a country that has 50%+ of the countryside below sea level and with a lot of defenses against sea surges or rivers bursting their banks, I am a bit baffled seeing cities like NYC, with a sea front directly to the huge Atlantic Ocean, doesn't have some proper sea defenses for a mere 3 to 3.5 meter surge. I am not saying there are no defenses there (I do not know really), but... how can this be?

I do not hear of any planning for the Tenerife tsunami or the Norge tsunami or... (all predicted massive landslides). The Atlantic may have fewer tsunamis than the Pacific or the Indian Ocean, but to seemingly rule it out... or are action taken but not reported?

You can bet when Atlantic City rebuilds their  water front .. they will put in place a better barrier ...

Climate change may well change the odds. If it does, you guys had better hire some Dutch engineers...
