I use them for multiple movie sets such as the old horror legacy and Star Trek collections, etc. I like having 1 profile for each movie. | | | Marty - Registered July 10, 2004, User since 2002. |

| Posted: | | | | I'm using Chile profiles. Evers discs has to be entered, especially in TV shows. And yes, it needs time to keep Them. up to date |

I use child profiles for everything too, I just don't assign the child profiles in TV series a Collection number and I don't count them as 1 (in Personal Information). | | | Time is the fire in which we burn. | Posted: | | | | Child profiles for TV show discs should have never been allowed. They serve no real purpose (everyting you need can also be stored in the parent) and they mess up the CLT numbers beyond belief. Child profiles are great for movie box sets, bonus feature films and for complete TV seasons, but disc-level profiles for individual TV show discs really was a bad idea to begin with.
I routinely find that the number of votes on the same change in parent and child result in ten times as much votes for the parent as for the child, meaning that about 90% of the userbase doesn't use them. Also, the quality of the data found in most disc-level profiles is absolutely horrendous...
But obviously there's no turning back. |

A db which needs CLT was a bad idea to begin with. Sometimes I wonder wether people contribute to get a better db or to get a tool needed to get better db work better |

You really should qualify your statements. Ken obviously thought they served a purpose and so do many other users who asked for them in the first place. I think you meant "they serve no purpose for YOU", and that's what you should have said! The fact that they screw up the CLT, along with a host of other problems with the CLT, tells me that the problem is with the CLT and not with the structure of the database! | | | Hal |

| Posted: | | | | I completely agree with Hal... in my eyes (To Me).... disc level child profiles for TV series was the best thing that happened to DVD Profiler since I first became a member... and I wouldn't have it any other way. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | I use child profiles and mark the discs as I watch them. Makes it easy to pick up where I left off if I take a break from the series - only have to figure out which episode on a disc I left off.
I do, however, strip out the cast & crew off the parent profiles. |

| Posted: | | | | I also strip out the cast and crew from the parent profile. Makes the totals much more accurate in my opinion.
Some people think cast and crew should be counted by season... Some people think cast and crew should be counted by profile... Some people think cast and crew should have counted by episode (this is my wish). As far as I have seen Invelos has never made an official statement on how cast and crew should be counted for TV series.
So even saying "they mess up the CLT numbers beyond belief" is a matter of opinion as well. At least till we know officially how Invelos wants cast and crew for TV series counted.
There is a lot I get out of having child profiles for TV series...
- Marking as watched per disc - Knowing which special features is on which disc - Episode synopsis - Broken down runtimes per disc - Have correct child cover-art - Have correct child case type
just to name a few off the top of my head | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | I'm with Hal, Pete and Dr. Killpatient.
I use child profiles. I strip the data from the parent and only use it in the children. It's more manageable. Like Pete I rarely watch only one episode on a disc. Normally, if there are 3/4 they get watched in one sitting - therefore making child profiles a much more accurate representation of viewing habits.
Like Hal, as someone who usually does a full audit on a profile, I find a single disc much more manageable. Especially in recent years where my interest in editing has gone downhill I would never do it if I had to do an entire season in one sitting (or remember where I'd got up to when there are days - or months - in between editing). Whereas, if I start a disc I finish it (today I've done 2 discs for a UK show).
The only thing I don't do is copy everything to the parent and submit it for other people. But, I do indicated in the parent profile update (as there usually is one adding the boxset contents) that I've fully audited the child profiles so people can copy the cast/crew to the parent if that's what they prefer.
This is definitely one of those cases where everyone gets what they want. The child profiles hurt no one (unless you really care about the CLT) and satisfies the requirements of those of us that use them.
I would NEVER remove mine! |

Because of bad db design we need stupid tools like CLT. Well, sort of. The lack of a way to link different iterations of the same person depending on how they were credited is a huge problem. A change in the database design is ONE way of fixing that problem, but it's not the only way. A linking function could be added to the application that would not require a database change. The CLT is a miserably failed way of doing it! | | | Hal |
