Quote: Technically, Profile 5 players (i.e. a new player) were needed to play Blu-ray 3D discs. You did not need a new player or drive to read the same old media type. So how do you actually watch a 3D Blu-ray in 3D on a Profile 2 player? You are planning to bore me to death, right? If the firmware of your hardware (or your software player) doesn't support MVC decoding, or the bandwith of your HDMI connection is not sufficient, what does this have to do with the Media Type? You can still play the same disc in 2D, read them out, read Disc IDs... because it's the same Media Type. There aren't "Blu-ray 3D" burner/drives and "Blu-ray 2D" burner/drives, just "Blu-ray" burner/drives. Because, until now, the Type of Media was the same. | | | Don't confuse while the film is playing with when the film is played. [Ken Cole, DVD Profiler Architect] |

Quote: Naming. "Blu-ray" refers to the blue laser. HEVC, etc., aside, do you really think that you can store 100 GB of data on a 50 GB disc? Nice try. Blu-ray doesn't refer to the blue laser but the name of the format which just so happens to use a blue laser. Blu-ray BonusView, BD-Live, 3D, and Ultra HD are the same format according to the BDA. The new Ultra HD Blu-ray players, which you will need to read the new higher capacity Media Type, are backward compatible.
Is that a question or a statement? Either way, yes, UHD Blu-ray players will play Blu-ray discs of other Profiles or using your terminology be backwards compatible. While I give most people enough credit to know that they must have a player (and TV) capable of 3D, UHD might not be as obvious. | | | Hal | | | Last edited: by hal9g |

| Posted: | | | | For Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D I can use my Blu-ray player. But for UHD Blu-ray I need a new player, so it is really a new media type and not to compare with Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D. And it's called officially UHD Disc and nothing from Blu-ray as I know. | | | * 3D TV Panasonic TX-P65VT30J + Blu-ray Player Panasonic DMP-BDT500 My Filmcollection online: www.filmkino.ch * |

I thought that, and most do allow 2D players to play the 3D disc (though often at a lower quality) but at least one 3D Blu I have will not decode at all on my 2D player... | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |

The logo was the normal DVD logo preceded by the addition of an HD logo. It was considered a new media type by invelos, so I don't see why this couldn't be considered a new media type as well. +1 |

It may also depend on your TV. Mine has the option of displaying 3D as 2D. It sounds like we're talking about two different things. If your TV has an option to display a 3D image as 2D then that is a separate thing. You still need a Blu-ray 3D (Profile 5) player to output that 3D image from a 3D only disc, in the first place, for the TV to convert it to 2D. If a Blu-ray disc only supports 3D, and not 2D, then you can't watch that disc on a standard Profile 2 Blu-ray player. |

You should brush up on the releases as not all Blu-ray 3D discs will play in 2D. One of the reasons why some releases also include a separate Blu-ray 2D disc. This is not a contradiction. The studios have decided that every 3D Blu-Ray on the market should either be playable with 2D hardware or contain a separate 2D disk, to avoid the situation that anyone should be forced to update his/her hardware. Therefore it was'nt the release of a new Media Type. So one could argue that DVD Profiler should only include UHD as a new Media Type if this time no regular Blu-Ray playback will be possible. | | | Recently bought films:

As mentioned above, that's mostly true, eg My Dredd 3D Blu plays on my 2D player (though I believe the quality is reduced); however they released a 3D copy of Top Gun that does not play on a 2D player (it just comes up with a splash screen saying that you need a 3D player) and didn't include a 2D disc in the box... so rdodolak is correct when he says only some 3D releases include a 2D disc if the 3D won't play on a non-3D machine. I was quite surprised when I discovered this the hard way I must say! | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong | | | Last edited: by Voltaire53 |
