On release day at my local Best Buy...

Well, there's your problem.

Well I live in Yuma, AZ, not really a hot bed for DVD buying options, it is either Best Buy or Wal-Mart and honestly I find new release prices to be cheaper at Best Buy.  Normally when I shop online it is not for new releases, but more so for bargain titles and usually in bulk 10 or more DVDs at a time.

In my opinion, here in the states, $19.99 is the standard price range for almost all new release DVDs (sales usually put them at $16.99 during the release week at Best Buy).  When I walk through the DVD aisles, $19.99 is the average mean price for DVD, but Blu-Ray remains in the higher $29.99 range, this includes pricing at the local Wal-Marts!!!  Since these are two of the larger retailers in the country, it is fairly easy to assume that this represents the current pricing averages of DVD vs. Blu-Ray and while there are sites like Deep Discount DVD and Fry's Electronics where you can often find cheaper than average Blu-Ray, the same title on DVD is usually priced well below the average as well.

Don't call Toshiba Out yet.. Their new invisions of XDE  Players may give Blu ray a run for its money...

I heard about that before. I really don't see how they wanna get more out of DVD Content that a good upscaling DVD Player already can. They should rather produce one HD-DVD Player so that the hundreds of thousands of people who still own HD-DVD's can buy something if their player breaks.

Also this technology is supposed to cost about $150. You can get a good Blu Ray Player for about $250. And in the US the prices for regular DVD's and Blu Rays are already pretty darn close.

So I really see no future in that new toshiba venture

You know I keep reading where people claim how close Blu-Rays are priced to DVDs, but yet I have yet to find this anywhere!!!  On release day at my local Best Buy, I can get a DVD on sale for $16.99, most of the time, but they never cost more than $19.99, yet the same movie released on Blu-Ray seem to be $29.99!!!

Also please list this good Blu-Ray players that you can get for under $250???  So far, from everything I have read, the PS3 is still the player to get, which boggles my mind that 3 years into Blu-Ray the Sony video game console remains the Best Blu-Ray player anyone can get under $499!!!

The Samsung BD-P 1500, which is a great piece of hardware. Costs $320 at amazon.com
And top movies like Rambo ($22,95) Batman Begins (17,95)..Or even the highly anticipated "Transformers" (which I have on HD-DVD) costs only 24,95. Or National Treasure 1&2 for 39.98.. The list is endless.. And you could never reach that quality with some sort of upscaling technique.. Also the Audio on a HD Disc will always be superior.. Is that worth a few extra bucks?  YES it is!

Well $10 difference for superior picture and more so a superior True HD or DTS HD Track is not that bad.. Think back of what the first DVD cost..

Yeah, I don't know about Blu-ray, but HD DVD was always way overpriced at BB; sometimes well over MSRP.  I don't understand how they sold a single disc.

Even now HD-DVD's are overpriced again. If you check amazon, titles that went for below $8 are going for 25+ now.. It seems they want to sell the last remaining ones with a big profit..

The Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Player is a nice player, but I own a Denon AVR 3805 (and I wont be updating for at least another year), an older receiver that cannot process the HD audio formats nor does it have HDMI capabilities.  knowing this I need a BD player that decodes TrueHD and DTS-HD internally with 5.1 or better analog outputs!!!  The only decent one I see is the Panasonic DMp-BD50, but it is more than I am willing to spend on a Blu-Ray player right now!!!

Perhaps I am in the minority here, but I am not filthy rich, not even rich for that matter.  $10 more for each movie just so I can watch in HD quality might seem logically sound, but it isn't fiscally sane for me!!!  While I am a huge supporter of HD quality movies and HD audio, I am still within the upscaling DVD crowd at the moment (though I do own 2 HD-DVD players and about 30 HD-DVDs).

If Sony suddenly releases a PS3 console with 5.1 analog out or better, I would jump on it immediately.  I am patient and I can wait for the Blu-Ray discs to come down in price or buy them during the occassional sales.  The PS3 still remains the best value Blu-Ray player on the market, it just doesn't work with my current AV set-up!!!

Well, at least you have an HD-DVD Player. There are still some sites around where you can pick up movie bargains. I have over 150 HD-DVD and I still keep buying them. But as for Blu Ray, sadly it's the future. Why not buy the player and pay in installments? That's how I got my Samsung 1080p tv. I pay about $100 each month for a year and then it's mine. And that's worth it. Before that I was watching BD and HD-DVD on an old Tube Tv.

I still shop for HD-DVDs and I watch diligantly for any sales or discounts I can find on them!!!  I buy them as I find movies I deem are "can't miss"!!!

In no way am I saying I am against Blu-Ray, I just am not impressed with the current stand-alones in terms of value vs. quality!!!  The PS3, a gaming console, still remains the best valued Blu-Ray player on the market, and from what i can tell it can do anything any other player on the market can do, except it lacks multichannel analog outputs!!!

Most likely a Blu-Ray player (PS3) will be on my christmas wishlist, it is how I got my HD-DVD player last year.  If I get one as a gift, it will be my BD player until I find a machine that will be the best upgrade and I can find!!!

Well actually the PS3 also misses the ability to output the HD Sound via Bitstream.
That means that the PS3 decodes the sound internally and sends it via HDMI to your receiver.

When it's bitstreamed the Player just sends the signal to the receiver and the receiver decodes it. The advantage of that is that on the display of the receiver you see stuff like "Dolby True HD" or "DTS HD Master". In case of the PS3 you will always just see "Multichannel"..

For some people, including me, that's reason enough to buy a Blu Ray Player that can bitstream the audio because it's very cool to read "True HD" on your Receiver Display.

Aside from that the PS3 is still one of the best Blu Ray Players around. I just read an article in a magazine today about the new players that arrive this and next month. And they also still mention that the PS3 is still a very cool option.

Bitstreaming is the way to go when you have a newer receiver capable of decoding all the HD audio codecs!!!  I will eventually upgrade my Denon AVR-3805 to the Denon AVR-3808CI which handles all the new codecs, but at $1699 msrp I don't see myself doing that anytime soon.  I could ofcourse go for one of the cheaper options out there like the Onkyo, but honestly I can wait until I can afford to buy the new Denon!!!

I'm still picking up a few HD DVDs, during the last weeks I've bought Notting Hill, Twilight Zone: The Movie, The Kingdom and The Holiday. There are still many I could buy, but I either have them on DVD or I'm not really that interested in the movie. But there are a few hundred more out there if you want to build a complete collection!

There are a lot titles out there on HD-DVD that I already own on DVD and therefore I am not 100% sold on buying in HD.  When I see an HD I don't have I then judge whether or not I just have to see that film in High Def!!!

For example, Patsa bought The Kingdom, Twilight Zone The Movie, and Notting Hill recently on HD-DVD.  Out of these three movies, in my opnion, The Kingdom would be a great movie to watch in HD quality picture and audio, the other 2 not so much!!!  Movies like Knocked Up or Accepted, while great movies (I own them on DVD), just aren't films I would double dip for just to see in HD!!!

I agree with you. There are dozens of exciting titles that really benefit from HiDef, but many others that I could care less if I ever watch, let alone own in HD or Blu-ray

I got an email with a followup HD DVD survey, asking all kinds of odd questions about what price I would pay for HD DVDs, and whether I was willing to buy barebones ones if the price were low enough, and a number of questions about my attitude toward direct to video and also standard DVDs containing HD DVD content.  That makes me think even more that this is related to the aborted project on Amazon of pressing HD DVDs of independent films essentially on demand.  Anyway, it was an interesting survey considering it's essentially a dead format at the moment.  There might be a little life in the old gal yet.
