| Posted: | | | | Yup... because I know when I see something like...
Genre: Comedy | Crime | Romance | Thriller more
... I for one always thought that more would bring me to more genres... not to something totally different. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting goodguy: Quote: Unlike keywords, genres are always completely listed before the "more" link. As I already said, each listed genre is also a link itself, allowing for further browsing and searching by that genre. The "more" link leads to the keyword list, because keywords provide an additional way of indexing movies, without the restrictions placed upon genres. That makes perfect sense to me in terms of design and usability. Small flaw in your "That makes perfect sense to me in terms of design and usability" stance. 3 lines below genre, there is a line that reads: Plot Keywords: Father Son Estrangement | Character's Point Of View Camera Shot | Pennsylvania | Hudson River | Friend more That 'more' link takes you to what you would expect it to take you to, a page titled 'Plot Keywords'. In addition: The 'more' link under 'Writers' takes me to 'Writing credits'. The 'more' link under 'Release Date' takes me to 'Release dates for'. The 'more' link under 'Tagline' takes me to 'Taglines for'. The 'more' link under 'Awards' takes me to 'Awards for'. The 'more' link under 'User Comments' takes me to 'User Comments'. The 'more' link under 'Cast' takes me to 'Cast'. Taking all that into account, why would the 'more' link under 'genres' take me to something other than a page with more genres? Not only is it misleading, but it is redundant. In my opinion, it is a design flaw that makes no sense. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. So does the "more" link in the "Also known As" section. Quote: Taking all that into account, why would the 'more' link under 'genres' take me to something other than a page with more genres? Not only is it misleading, but it is redundant. In my opinion, it is a design flaw that makes no sense. Redundancy in a user interface is a way to ensure easy usability. For example, there are various (and partially redundant) ways to navigate all the subpages for a movie: Below the movie title is a horizontal link bar. On the left side of each page is a navigation section, containing the Quicklinks combo box, the Top Links section, and the grouped list of all navigation links. As I said, keywords are an additional way for indexing movies. So to me, the "more" link for genres is redundant, but neither misleading nor a design flaw. Anyway, let's agree to disagree here. We both made our point, and there isn't a real need to sidetrack this thread further. | | | Matthias | | | Last edited: by goodguy |

| Posted: | | | | Face it Mathias. it is a very poor design on their part. Defend it all you wish, but it is very sloppy, and it does not add any kind of redundancy to their database AT ALL.

So does the "more" link in the "Also known As" section. Yes, it does go to that page but it goes to a specific part of the page called 'Also Known As (AKA)' so I am not sure what your point is. Quote:

Nice bit of misdirection but I wasn't talking about navigational links. I was talking about a 'more' link, under a specific heading, not going to a page that has more of that item. Quote: As I said, keywords are an additional way for indexing movies. So to me, the "more" link for genres is redundant, but neither misleading nor a design flaw. That only makes sense if you don't know what the word 'more' means. In this context, it means an additional amount of genres. Since that isn't what the link leads to, it is misleading. I guess we will have to as I can't make any sense out of your argument. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. Quote: Perhaps English isn't your primary language. Reread my post. Everything you need is there.
I know you are American so I know English isn't your primary language so I'll try to make it easy..
A single profile (with the sound not in English - or even American) would be classed as Foreign language if viewed by an American and not (classed as Foreign Language) if viewed by the person who lived in that country.
How can something be usable if its use depends on where the viewer lives? Swift move, Paul. Switching from attacking me personally to attacking all Americans is a wonderfully effective method of making a point. As I said, re-read my posts. I suggested it be governed by region/locality. I hope you understand it now. | | | Dan |

| Posted: | | | | I would love this feature, for a reason not stated. I use external software to integrate with DVDprofiler (both SageTV & CQC). They use a DVDPro XML export file and load it up. I need to be able to set the genre field, tags won't cut it as neither Sage nor CQC use that field.
The inability to set "Bollywood" or other custom genres really sucks.
Here's a screenshot. Selecting the DVD automatically queues it up in the Sony 777 Megachanger, so it's a painless playback mechanism.

| Posted: | | | | Personally I would prefer something like this on long term:
1) A fixed number of standard genres are included in the program (pretty much like now) 2) The user can add any number of private genres to the list locally 3) The user can assign any number of genres to a movie (private and standard genres). 4) If the user does not assign genres to a movie the three (or whatever) standard genres set in most uploaded dvd collections are used.
Potential improvements: 5) Allow disabling some of the standard genres so you never see them. 6) Automatic locking of genres once the profile is downloaded the first time for those people who do not want data to change without they notice. This could be integrated with the current comparison we have when updating profiles.
Notice I do not consider this a high priority change, as the tag system can indeed hold the necessary data, but not in a completely ideal way (as the genres are still in the system next to the tags and show up in filter etc). | | | Regards Lars | | | Last edited: by lmoelleb |
