And IF I post and don't think it's a spoiler and YOU do, north...then what...more abuse of the rep system? Surely that is not what you are suggesting, we get quite enough of that right now.

I am trying here, north, but I simply don't see that this will solve anything. WHAT CONSTITUTES A SPOILER? I am not saying I am against it or for it, I am trying to understand the function of something that is totally subjective, and then if it's instituted watching users whine about someone exercising his own discretion and deciding something is not a spoiler while everyone beats on him because they think it is. And trust me being beaten is something I am expert at, and some users don't like it at all when I beat back. Then we have users like Rick....

That situation is always going to occur, but the introduction of spoiler tags would reduce them. At the moment we have no choice, the tags would give us that choice.

This thread is just a feature request. There's no need to establish rules or guidelines. All the OP is doing is requesting a new, easy-to-add feature for the forum.

We have a button to turn text into bold, but no rules governing when to turn text bold. A spoiler button would work the same way.

You are correct James. I am absolutely NOT interseted in Rick's opinions on any topic, at least until he learns how comprehend what i am saying.

@ North

I am still looking for the answer to how to solve the inevitable differences of opinion of what constitutes a SPOILER. Do we watch users whine about it or do we, which I am sure Rick would love to do, firther abuse the rep system, after all anybody who dares to disagree and wish to be persuaded must either be IGNORED or shut down or belittled...right Rick and James.

IS THAT NOT ENOUGH?

That is enough in a thread designed to contain spoilers.  But, if I recall correctly, the last time this came up...and the reason it came up again this time...was that spoilers were included in threads that did not contain a *spoiler warning* in the thread title.

As to what constitutes a spoiler?  Any post that details specific plot points is a spoiler.  The most egregious spoiler is one that gives away plot twists...such as the identity of Luke's father or who is or is not a Cylon.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

Hmm... yes. Me.

I posted who the five new Cylons were. After they were revealed in season three, after season four started, after season three DVDs were available worldwide. And still I took amazing grief for answering a specific question.

Skip's point is valid.

But I both voted "no" because I have no problem with spoilers without labels, and I like the idea of turning text into "invisotext" -- if I (or any other poster) wish to write something which requires the readers to choose if he or she wishes to read it. I have yet to determine precisely what colors would cause my text to become totally invisable.

'K?
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Ok, I'll buy that, Unicus, though it still is VERY subjective as to exactly what it is. And that still doesn't deal with what about the inevitable disagreements over what constitutes SPOILER, then what, listen to people whine about it...POLLS to whip that person into line ala the way this poll has been utilized...or misuse the rep system in order to impose will upon the "offending" user.

I'm confused. You say you voted no, but you then to go on to say how you like the idea of turning text into "invisotext"? Isn't that what the spoiler tags could do for you?

And....

The only reason I put "Warning: Topic may contain spoilers" and then changed it to "Warning: Topic Contains spoilers" was... well.... because we don't have spoiler tags. If we did, I wouild have just had a "Your Dark Knight thoughts" as the topic. But, I figured the first topic I used, the word "May" may contain issues, so, I edited the title to remove it.

Now, keep beating this horse until it's a bloody pulp, it's an olympic sport around here it seems.

Also, why does anyone need an answer to why spoilers are needed? Who cares if there is or isn't an answer, it was only a request. Stiop beating and/or biting people for asking for features. I think an unexpected trip has more bearing on slowing down development than a silly little request here and there!

Now, brow beat me a bit.

I think there is a little confusion about what prompted this request.  If I'm reading the original poster correctly, it is because of The X-Files thread, which had no spoiler warning about revealing an element of the movie's ending, not The Dark KnightThe Dark Knight is clearly marked for spoilers.

This function exists on most forums and is easily handled by the discretion of the user.  It is a simple courtesy to allow those who don't want to have a film ruined to read the rest of a particular thread, while those who have seen the film can continue to discuss it.

Actually, you took grief because you did not answer a specific question.  The thread in question was simply asking how to credit 'Grace Parks'.  You, and a couple of others, went off topic and listed all the Cylons by name and...in your case...pictures.

Others should have gotten grief as well but, I suspect, you took the brunt of it because you were so vocal in your opinion that you did nothing wrong.

A spoiler tag will not solve all the problems.  People that don't care whether or not they spoil it for other people will still cause problems.  What a spoiler tag will do is reduce the problem.  It will give those of us who do care, the ability to have discussions without messing it up for everyone else.

Exactly. Personally, I don't mind reading spoilers. I'm aware that others do. So I would of course use a spoiler tag before revealing certain specifics of a movie I write about, because it is the polite thing to do. In light of that, it doesn't surprise me at all who is arguing against it.

As for disagreements what constitutes a spoiler: If I write something I myself do not consider a spoiler and someone points out that it might be one - well, then I simply add a spoiler tag even if I disagree. A spoiler tag is just a mechanism to force another conscious action by a reader before a certain part of the text is revealed.
