Custom media types are fine, but local only. It should be good to have a fixed voice in the program that can be contributed for everyone.

They should be local only. The majority of users feel that 3D Blu-ray is NOT a new media type so why should they be hampered with having to remove it from their profiles when they are updated with this "new" media type?

With Ace_of_Seven's suggestion (see his post august 21) they wouldn't have to remove anything. 3D wouldn't be seen as a new format, but could still be included in the online database.

Doesn't belong there either. That section of DVD Profiler is reserved for the Video System (NTSC or PAL)and Aspect Ratio. 3D on Blu-ray is nothing more than a video codec, not a media format, not a Video Format (Aspect Ratio) or Video System (PAL/NTSC).

Which doesn't mean that it shouldn't be reserved for even more information, like 3D (or codecs or whatever else) in the next release.

3D is a video system. Right now, we just don't track video system info for HD. Is there some reason to be opposed to people with 3D Blu-rays being able to find them without having to make a custom tag and enter everything manually?

Video System??? Ok...whatever .

You already have a method available...it's called Custom Media Type. Use it and move on .

Custom media types are rather limited in applicability since you can only have one per title and they aren't contributable. Yes, 3D is a video system. It's a way of encoding the images for transmission to a TV and the TV must be compatible with the video system to decode it. It's functionally equivalent to the variosu computer standards PAL & NTSC this way. What do you this the term means?

This is completely irrelevent in regards to DVD Profiler. The "Video System" for DVDs or Blu-rays is either PAL or NTSC...there is no 3D Video system. You are talking about how a 3D film is made and then encoded to disc which is not relevent here. The content on a 3D Blu-ray disc is a video codec...not a video system .

No, a codec is a way of compressing data, like MPEG-2 or AVC. Codecs don't matter to the TV because the player decodes them and send the raw video signal to the TV. Video format is how the raw video signal is formatted.

And 3D Blu-ray is not a Video Signal and therefore does not belong in the Video Format area of the Profile along with NTSC and PAL. So what are you you going on about?

What can be said against a Custom Collection Category? DVD Profiler is quite customizable.

NTSC DVD isn't a video signal either. It's a combination of a video signal and a medium which contains the data for this signal. DVD supports NTSC or PAL video signals which can be 16:9 or 4:3. Blu-ray supports these formats, plus 720p, 1080i 50 Hz, 1080i 60 Hz, 1080p 2D 24 Hz and 1080p 3D 24 Hz. What shoudl we track PAL and NTSC and not these?

I'm talking about media types, not collection categories. 3D is objective information that's of interest to a lot of people. It's not the sort of data it's beneficial to keep local.

That was supposed to say What do you think this term means? I.e., what is the definition of a video format and why do PAL and NTSC fit, but not anything else?

Hasn't been answered satisfactory yet.

What belongs in the Videoformat area is not for you or me to decide. You feel 3D-info doesn't belong there, I feel it's the logical place to put it. Ultimately Ken will decide one way or the other. In the meantime, how about we skip the roll eyes etc.?

3D is a matter-of-fact, not an opinion. Online and local stores have now a special 3D section for Blu-Ray discs.
Now i don't want to argue on what it is or not, but is somethng that do exist, is not "custom" at all and needs to be officially classified in the Invelos contributions.
I think we all do agree on this, isn't it?
I can resist everything but temptation.

Yes, just like we reocgnize DTS in audio, which also requires special equipment. Use a checkbox.

If anyone ever accuses you of being predictable just deny it. I will back you up.
There is no way I was expecting that reaction.
