The TV series 'Mum' has no credited writers. However, at the very beginning of each episode, the screen says Mum by Stefan Golaszewski.

Should Stefan Golaszewski credited as the writer in any capacity?

It has. As you've shown, it credits Stefan Golaszewski as "by". That may not be the form that we prefer, but it *is* the writing credit. Every imaginable source, including Stefan Golaszewski, will confirm that he wrote each and every episode of this show.

British TV shows actually use "by" as the sole writing credit quite regularly, and from what I've seen, these are routinely entered as "Writer" into DVD Profiler. I do it like that, too - and indeed I have done that in my profiles for 'Mum'.

Thanks for your reply. I thought he should be credited as a writer but wasn't sure whether to enter his name because it doesn't seem to fit under the contribution rules, so wanted to go if anyone had successfully add a writer this way or had any strong feelings about this issue.

Couldn't that also mean "Created By" though, which is a separate but equally valid credit?  I would actually say this is more likely based on the on-screen credit.

I've got several seasons of "Silent Witness", another British TV-Series.
While they have a simple "by" credit in earlier seasons (or at least around 9 & 10, don't have earlier seasons), they switched to "Written by" in later seasons.
Also this credit comes after the episode title, a 'created by' would come before.
And most importantly they have several writers on the show that have been credited both ways, a 'created by' would always state the same.

So T!M's explanation seems valid for this series, and I've seen others as well.
May some series use the "by" as 'created by', I don't know.

To me it looks the credit comes after the series title, which would indicate created by.

Not saying you're right or wrong, just saying I don't think it's clear-cut.

My whole post referred to "Silent Witness" as an example for an "By" credit.

I Don't know "Mum" and can't speak for that.
But you're right, it looks the credit comes after the series title in the picture.
Are there on screen episode titles? Some shows don't have those, but as I said I don't know this particular one.

British TV shows more often than not don't seem to include a "Created By" credit at all. I've just checked this on about fifty UK TV shows, from the 1960s up to now, and the vast majority doesn't include any. From 'The Avengers' and 'The Prisoner', via 'Fawlty Towers', then 'The Office' and 'Extras', and more recently to 'Years and Years' and 'Fleabag': none of them have any "creator" credits. Chances of finding these increase when you focus on things made in the last decade or so: shows like 'Doc Martin', 'Death in Paradise' and 'Sherlock' *do* include them, so they're clearly being used more and more. But in American TV, "created by" has been a fixture for many, many decades. There are, of course, many more examples to be found, both with and without these.

As for Stefan Golaszewski: as far as I can tell he really did both, he created the show *and* wrote each and every episode of it. But personally I wouldn't extrapolate that lone "by" credit into two separate crew entries in DVD Profiler - for me, the "writer" credit suffices. If you Google "Stefan Golaszewski", you'll find that he's consistently referred to as the "writer" of 'Mum', never as the "creator" of 'Mum'. Here's an example from The Guardian:

Mum writer Stefan Golaszewski: ‘This is a show with no baddies’

That may be related to what I said above, that the "created by" credit was, and still is, though to a lesser extent nowadays, not so much a fixture in British TV. That credit doesn't necessarily *have* to be there in British TV.
