| Posted: | | | | It would be great to be able to import the XML back into DVD Profiler. In that way you could do bulk updates to the database by simply modifying the XML.
For instance, rather than going through each DVD and modifying the CoO you could do them all quickly and easily. Or, a quick way of entering cast etc
What's people's thoughts on this? |

| Posted: | | | | While it would be good for certain things. Like CoO, it would potentially open a problem where by someone could contribute crap en mass. Sure most would be picked up by the voters/screeners but some would be bound to get through.
For me, I'd love to be able to change the 'personal' data that way. So, purchase place/price/date, notes section, add/remove events, movie/video/audio/extras rating, disc locations, tags etc. | | | Home of the phpDVDProfiler forums |

| Posted: | | | | I voted a determined "Maybe" Because I right now have no need for it, but I see both the positive as the possible negative impacts exactly like ajm. Not to mention that it would need quite a sophisticated errorhandling or a good DTD-scheme to handle wrong input. What should happen if the XML contends a "5.2" soundformat? Or a Retailer that isn't in the Retailer-DB? Et cetera et cetera... cya, Mithi | | | Mithi's little XSLT tinkering - the power of XML --- DVD-Profiler Mini-Wiki |

| Posted: | | | | Well, I already have written a private plugin that does this. If there is serious interest (so far, it doesn't look that way) I might polish it up and make it public. As Mithi already pointed out, data validation may become an issue - my current version does nothing in that regard. | | | Matthias |

IMO data validation has to be made (and probably is made) in the contribution system to prevent garbage out of the online database. Why would you want to prevent garbage in someones local database? |

| Posted: | | | | I understood that the data validation was not about "correct data" (which indeed would be weeded out in the voting process), but to avoid corruption of the local database... | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. Registered: May 29, 2000 (at InterVocative) |

| Posted: | | | | I could have sworn I typed up a reply to this yesterday, but now I don't see it. Anyway, I have no use for what you're suggesting. But if you expended the request a little, I would totally agree. What I mean is, I think we should not only be able to re-import the XML (which I would find useless), but it should also be able to import UPCs and Titles. We have an awesome export feature that makes it easy to move your collection to other sites (DVDSpot, DVDAficionado, etc). But we have no easy way for those users to import their collection to Profiler. I have actually seen people say they would try out the program, but it's too much effort to re-enter their collection. If there was an easy way for them to simply import their collection from another program, we'd probably pick up a few more users. So I support a more generic import, but not in this limited fashion. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. |

| Posted: | | | | I had a large collection in Profiler that I exported to a backup file and XML file. After some drive failures, I have the XML file but not the backup file.
I'd love to be able to re-import the XML file than scrolling through it and re-entering hundreds of DVDs.
You could resolve the potential submission spam by simply flagging DVD's brought in via XML as not acceptable for online/update submissions. |
