How about adding a field (check box or radio button, perhaps) that could be used to count DVDs the way each user wants versus the total count of profiles?
EG: I generally count TV Seasons as 1 item but with child profiles it gets inflated, so I would set the parent to count and the children not to count. This way each user can set the counter their own way, with the default set to count, so that for those that do not want to use it or with large collections it would be a matter of unsetting only those that the user does not want counted towards the total DVDs

I don't know what you use the collection numbers for, but I use them for exactly that purpose. I assign a collection number only to what I want to count (childs of movie boxset, TV series season, each anime volume) and the highest collection number assigned gives me my DVD count.

So I'm in the 1200+ club

Ross:

So do I, BUT there are users that will use their numbering to as sort of a "Dewey Decimal System" and will assign, for example, 0-1000 Drama, 1001-2000 Science Fiction and so on. That system would not yield any information of value for this purpose.

Didn't realise that. Makes sense.

Come to think of it, I even used a "Dewey Decimal System" as you call it, and assigned 9999 to the few discs I wanted to sell. That was before the arrival of tags

My collection numbers indicate where the DVD is stored, as an easy reference. It is not a "Dewey Decimal System" but is does serve a purpose beyond counting, hence the request.

Absolutely Caroline, that is another use of numbers. For Ross. For example, I number my shelving units and shelves, so Book shelf 1 Shelf 1 spot 35 on the shelf  becomes 1135, you could do something similar with Carousels or whatever you chose. I am not sure how you would resolve these various possibilities to come up with a count. I suppose perhaps a checkbox in your settings to tell the program how you want to do it...but not sure, haven't worried about it very much.
