Back on the old Intervocative forum we had a discussion about locality once and the result of that was that the locality of a DVD was where it was bought. This was so that the SRP should be in the locale curency if I remember correctly.

In the contribution rules this is the text:
"Make sure that the locality selected is correct for the release. In your profile, use the language of the locality for the release. Do not use mixed languages."

Does this mean that a UK release is a UK release even if it's for sale in another country?
And how about the scandinavian releases that contains norwegian, swedish, danish and finish on the back, should I mark mine bought in Norway with Norway, even if it's clearly not a Norwegian release?

Yes, it remains a UK release even if it's been imported into another country.
When they say use the country where it was bought, I think it's more accurate to say, use the country where the DVD was intended to be sold. If it was made for the UK market, use UK as the country.
The Scandinavian one sounds more complicated. Are you saying that the DVD has been produced with all those languages on the cover and is intended to be sold in all those countries?
If that is the case, I would say the best way to deal with it is to have different profiles for each country with their own locality. That way, each country can have their own language in the overview.

I have always created a new (Finnish locality) profile for Scandinavian releases if one already did not exist. One example

There is ratings for each country and the overview is in four different language. Therefore there should be four profiles for this one release.

The rating used on the covers should give you a very good hint which locality to use for the relase. If you buy locally an imported UK release, there usually is only UK rating. Then you should use UK locality.

That makes perfect sense to me.
Thanks for clarifying this jykke, I've never seen a release like this before.

One addition: Eg. this Finnish/Swedish release for Hitchcock collection has separate EAN codes for both countries. Therefore there should be two profiles.

Now, the tricky question is to figure out which one of the codes is for Finland.

Well, let's look at the information on the cover, using normal reading order from left to right and from up to down:
Flags in the upper right corner: first Sweden then Finland.
Disc features:  first Swedish then Finnish.
Yellow bars which forbid renting:  first Swedish then Finnish.
Copyright text:  first Swedish then Finnish.
Ratings:  first Sweden then Finland.
Codebars: i'd say Finland, then Sweden, based on the fact that Warner Bros. Entertainment Finland has used code 7321944 in other releases too.

The text above the barcodes might show the locality:
FDVDS72365 and SDVDS72365

Sorry - I thought you were kidding when you asked that question!

Actually the way I would do it is:
one barcode has "FDVD..." the other has "SDVD..." above it.
or does that mean something else?

Edit: jhagblad beat me to it

Yeah, S is for Suomi (Finland in Finnish)
Currently the Finnish locality release of the Hitchcock collection is entered into the online database with the Swedish code. There is no Swedish locality entry at all. No one in Sweden owns this?

The titles was made for UK, but also released in Norway.
The titles I know about are:
Atlantis: The Lost Empire: Collector's Edition 5-017188-884549
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: 2 Disc Collector's Edition 5-017188-883573
The Emperor's New Groove: Collectors's Edition (Never got it, I have the normal one that did have a Norwegian release).

All of these are clearly made for the UK, with UK ratings on.

These titles was released by Buena Vista in Norway at the same time the "normal" releases came with Norwegian covers and barcodes. I'm guessing that this was done to please people more into DVDs with a Collector's Edition and still get most people to buy the cheep normal one.

And no, I don't think this happens alot anymore.

But then again if the new rules are the country they originally where made for, then there are some old profiles that needs to be removed.

Snow White was released also in Finland with the same EAN with UK covers. However, the back cover information do not match with the discs. The UK version do not have Finnish audio track or subtitles. I assume they changed disc 1 to one with Finnish audio and subtitles. Therefore I have treated this release of Snow White as a Finnish locality release.

If the discs are different in terms on content, then they've obviously been made for your locality and you should have no resistance to making a new profile for it with your locality.
It sounds like in some cases, even though they make discs for different markets, they only print an all-encompassing cover!
