| Posted: | | | | As someone suggested to me in the Widescreen Collection discussion, it would be useful to have a Collection field in addition to the Edition field. As it is now, there are numerous discussions whether or not a certain banner on the cover serves as an Edition or not. This is typically banners that indicate the DVD being part of some collection, e.g. Movie Gold Collection, Quality Film Collection, Widescreen Collection, etc... Sometimes such DVDs even do have an actual Edition as well, e.g. Director's Cut, Collector's Edition, 2-Disc Edition, etc... Having a separate field for Collection and Edition would make things a lot easier. |

| Posted: | | | | I'm sorry, but I do not understand what the advantage of this will be. A Collection is an Edition and vice versa in my opinion. If people do not want certain labels attached to their profiles, they can just lock their titles and keep their preference local. I do not think an extra field would solve this. | | | Martin Zuidervliet

| Posted: | | | | I agree with Martin - I see no benefit to this.
And I think it would just generate loads of arguments about whether a certain thing is an edition or a collection. | | | Andy

| Posted: | | | | I guess the idea of the request was, that this could also expand the information where we currently have to choose one of two "Editions" mentioned on the cover.

| Posted: | | | | The idea was basically due the a contribution Repter made on a DVD which had 'Widescreen collection' on the front (like a lot of Paramount DVD's have). I voted 'No' on that contribution, because imho it is not an edition name.
Because Repter was not sure about it, he posted a request in the Contribution request form about it. Since then I've learned that the rules indicate:
The Edition field is for distinguishing between DVDs, and for indicating special versions and collections (for example The Criterion Collection, Widescreen, Full-Screen Edition).
A lot of people replied on this request something along the line: 'as much as I hate it, it is allowed according to the rules'.
So this is the history on this request.
I mentioned this to Repter in a PM discussion we had, and although I think it is a nice addition, I'm afraid that if it is added we get a lot of contributions indicating only a 'collection' change (just like the 'Country of origin' change).
Changing it locally and lock it, can be an option, but I don't think that's the purpose of a shared database. In my opinion you shoud lock as less as possible. | | | Who is General Failure? And why is he reading my hard drive? |

Your NO vote on Repter's contribution was based soley on personal preference. According to the rules, his contribution was perfectly valid. IMHO the ones to lock their profiles would be those opposed to the Edition change. I see no reason to add a "Collection" field as this is already covered in the rules for Editions. | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

| Posted: | | | | I'm surprised at the opposition here, I think rvlier's suggestion makes perfect sense. Semantically there definitely is a difference between a Collection and an Edition. Collection = being part of a relatively large set of items that have a common denominator. So it refers to multiple items, which are somehow related. Edition = a specific variation on a single item. So it refers to the individual. Since some people don't see any advantages, let me give some : * you could easily query your database for all DVDs in a specific Collection. E.g. give me all Movie Gold Collection DVDs. It makes less sense to query on Edition. * there are no issues with DVDs that have both a Collection and Edition nomer. Also, it's not because the rules tell you to use the Edition field even for Collections, that this cannot be argued about. In fact, this is still the Feature Request forum . | | | Last edited: by hevanw |

| Posted: | | | | While i still remain opposed to what i consider to be the utter nonsense of Widescreen Collection, et al being used largely because it is data we already have in the program. It is what was decided, som I agree with what has been said. It is unnecessary to add a field simply for this purpose, it is dealt with adequately in the Rules. Anything else becomes personal opinion and that belong locally ONLY, so Terry is right, use the tags.
