One of the current working guidelines we're using for common names is this:

3. If a person has accents in their name, then the common name includes them even if they are more commonly credited without (this is out of simple courtesy, I'd hate it if my name was spelled wrong)

Question: Should we include diacritical marks (accents, cedillas, tildes, circumflex, etc) to common names and if so, under what circumstances?

Like you James I don't like having my name spelt incorrectly...so why should we do it to other peoples.

If a person is credited without those marks in some movies, I don't think we should use it in the common name either. Because of one thing: The search function doesn't match á when you search for a. Because of this, it will be much harder to know if the actor is in the database.

And if we should follow the argument "this is out of simple courtesy, I'd hate it if my name was spelled wrong", it would be Jada Pinkett Smith, not Jada Pinkett (since that is the real name and that is how it is spelled)

So because of usability, I think we should decide on a case to case basis

Usability issues can be addressed by the programmer.  Search functions can be modified to accommodate for diacritics.

And we have asked for this change to the searches more than once. About 25% of my collection is in languages where the names often use diacritical marks, this would be a very big help!

If I had a choice, it would be to not add such marks at any time.

1.  Movie credits are not consistent in adding them, and even when they do they aren't always correct.

2.  It would be one thing is we could just type the stuff, but we can't and have to use the Character Map to add them.  That's a royal pain in the ass when you're trying to enter a cast list.

3.  Some of the marks used in certain languages can't be duplicated even with the Character Map.

My question on this is simple, as always...DOCUMENTATION. I wish had a buck for every time I have run across a Jose (example) who has an extensive resume of ONE credit, yet somewhere someone has inserted the diacritical mark, though the credits don't show. With ALL of ONE credit one has to wonder exactly what level of expertise entitles someone to ASSUME data that is not supported.

In this case I feel that we should not add the marks ( if there is only one credit for an actor, then 'as credited' should be used ).

If there is a mix of credits, some with and some without the marks, I would then add them to the common name. Penélope Cruz is an example of a case that I think we should use a common name using the 'é'.

By the way, to enter 'é' on a US keyboard; hold down the ALT key and type 0233 of the numberpad.

You will get no argument from me, Paul I am just curious how with ONLY one Credit for Jose someone is able to determine that the name is José.  Actually I take that back I think both of us know the answer.

And I use the character map, it is much easier.

Depends on who "we" are, it's usually no problem to type on a European keyboard.

For those of you using my Cast & Crew Editor, a reminder: You can call up a character map via Tools->Character Set.

The reason I said that we should include the accents is becauseI know that in the French language, accents aren't added to capital letters and end credits are almost always in capitals.
So Jérémie can be written as JEREMIE but it doesn't mean that they meant to write Jeremie.
I think it's a different situation to Jada Pinkett/Jada Pinkett Smith because Jada Pinkett was her name before marriage. It's more like saying that Jade Pinkett is the same as Jada Pinkett.

North:

While the premise you put forth is correct. Hollywoo not using diacriticals because of caps is patently untrue, even for the feckless French language , I have noted them several times over the years. Most times you would be correct, but NOT always. I wish I could think of the last one I saw, but it has been several months ago.
