I would like to be able to click HD DVD and be able to put in a region.
At this time, I noticed that when you click HD DVD you cannot put in a region,
unless of course I have missed something. |

While this may come from a glitch in the process from the beginning in March or so, they obviously need correction...?

Actually, these are all dual-format releases and I guess right or wrong the contributrers figured they would include the Region of the DVD side. If I understand correctly an HD-DVD reader can read any HD-DVD since they doesn't use the code zone. But can it read regular DVD for any code zone too? If the answer is yes, I just find what will be my next reader.
What I means is if I have an HD-DVD reader, I can put a DVD from any zone (1,2,3,4,5,6) and the reader will act like a multi-zone DVD reader without a code or a modification.

I don't know if this is actually true, but if it is - does this mean that players sold are in fact region specific, but the current crop of HD DVDs are region free, or does it mean that current players are region free?
While that has no practical impact right now, it may have in the future. Anyone know? | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users.

New Line in America use BD Regional Coding and are delaying the HD-DVD versions until it's been released more worldwide, they'd definitely use it if it was available.
Nah nothing on the HD-DVD camp has even be decided and I doubt it ever will now.
All HD-DVD and BD Players are SD DVD region locked and no hacks exist. There is a hacked firmware out there for an early Toshiba model but it still won't play some RCE or RCE like titles (I hear Star Wars for example) so it's next to useless.
You'll still need a DVD Player. Personally I'm happy with this as my DVD Player is a DVD Recorder anyway. |

If you look at the DVD Forum Steering Committee Meeting Details you see them talking about the "RPC for HD DVD Ad Hoc Group". RPC = Regional Playback Control So they may try to add region codes to HD DVD players/discs in the future but I don't know if they can put the cat back in the bag. The last thing I read said they were looking at using almost the same regions as DVD with some small changes to R2 to match Europe as it is today. | | | | Tom. |
