| Posted: | | | | In DVD Profiler 2.4, when you clicked on "Add DVD," DVD Profiler would prompt first before updating the local database file, like this: I personally use DVD Profiler strictly offline and enter all of my own data, so I don't need or want it, but this would also be very useful to people who want to use DVD Profiler when not being connected to the Internet, or for people who want to control when their local database index files get updated. DVD Profiler 3.x should prompt before updating after clicking "Add DVD" like 2.4 did, or, there should be a configuration option for this in Tools->Options->Online, something like "Automatically update local database file after clicking 'Add DVD'" -> Always, Never, Prompt. FYI, if DVD Profiler can't connect to the Invelos servers on the update, it hangs, at least for me. This means blocking the Invelos site (via HOSTS, non existant proxy, firewall, unplugged Internet connection) is not a solution. More importantly, it means that users will not be able to add a DVD unless they have an active Internet connection! Hope my request is taken seriously and considered. | | | Keepin' it local | | | Last edited: by Psylocibe |

Skip Skip, did you even read what Psylocibe is asking? Did you really have to ask that question? We all know the answer. Oh, wait, maybe it was a rhetorical question. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. Hope my request is taken seriously and considered. I don't want to sound like I'm belittling your request - which is a perfectly valid one, I think all communication via the internet should be in the control of the user. But I've just tried adding a DVD while blocking Profiler using my firewall and it works fine, it doesn't hang for me at all. Have you ever allowed the program to connect even once since installing? As the first time the program connects it downloads files it needs to continue. Even 2.4 couldn't add discs without first doing this. It only has to be once, after that it should work offline fine. |

It's downloaded an update to the master list of DVD Titles and their UPC's. Your profile database data is untouched. |

All has been discussed in the technical forum and now he asks for a new feature as there is no technical solution. | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

| Posted: | | | | I guess it could be useful to all our friends who still use dial-up connections or don't want the automatic download happen for some reason. The pop up question would allow this to be a conscious choice, rather than blocking it through a firewall and then unblocking in case you actually want to update. | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. | Posted: | | | | For some users it will be a good thing, not for me since I go online everyday. But an option to download or not download the update profile database will make this and everybody will be happy.
P.S : Psylocibe, I understand your need don't take my word on the other topic too personal. |

| Posted: | | | | I would like to second Psylocibe's request. It seems simple enough to implement, and I have had multiple instances where I'd prefer that the local database files didn't update at a particular time.
By the way, I tried putting in a proxy server, with "127.0.0.1," and "999" for the port. Rather than hang, DVD Profiler completely ignores it and updates the local database files anyways.
I haven't tried blocking it with a firewall. (I don't know the IP address or addresses to block and I'm too lazy to figure it out.)
The "cancel" button doesn't seem to do anything. I get a prompt asking if I really want to cancel, I click "Yes," then it continues to download and process the files. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." | | | Last edited: by Grendell |

Obviously don't know what you are using, but some firewalls will allow you to block a program rather than the destination IP. I know ZoneAlarm works that way. It could actually be set to "Always Ask" so you would be prompted for each attempt and could either Allow or Deny. | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. | Posted: | | | | If the dialog is added, I'd like to suggest adding an "Always connect" option so I don't get prompted again. Maybe an options setting to clear the Always Connect option. |

| Posted: | | | | That's why I've written that it's better to made this an option and not a pop-up window. It seem, at least for me, frustrating to have the software always ask the same question everytime I want to add a new DVD. |
