| Posted: | | | | I know this has been asked before, but I couldn't find that topic to resurrect it, and the discussion in "Rename Name Fields" seems to be heading in this direction, so I thought I'd start a new topic to separate it out.
It has been suggested that instead of having a single profile for each DVD, each with separate cast & crew credits etc. That a core profile is created for each film that would be shared among all DVD profiles for that film. I'm guessing that this profile could contain:
Original Title CoO Production Year Cast & Crew
Obviously the DVD profile would also contain this info if needed in case of any variations, and would override/supplement the info in the core profile.
Pluses: Updates and corrections to cast & crew would affect a lot more DVDs and most likely create a more accurate database. New DVD releases for old titles would be easier to create as a lot of the info is already there.
Minuses: Regional variations could make things complicated. You'd have two profiles to download/maintain not just one. If you make any adjustments - how do you decide which one to change? Bad submissions will cause a lot more damage than they do currently.
I hope I've described the idea properly - this isn't my idea (although I quite like it) and don't want to misrepresent it.
Edit: removed Studios, mdnitoil is right - too many variations. But added Original Title cos I've just thought of it! | | | Last edited: by northbloke |

| Posted: | | | | I can appreciate the idea. Off the top of my head, studios would not be included in any "master" profile. Primarily because they absolutely will vary across regions based on distribution rights. Beyond that, I'm all for the idea. If we're ever to get a handle on cast/crew linking, then this seems the only reasonable approach.
The only other possibility as I see it, is to segregate the various regions for the purposes of linking and credit lookups. |

Each to its own. If you change, say, an actor in the override layer, then the contribution should only affect the supplemental profile. Quote: Bad submissions will cause a lot more damage than they do currently. But more eyes would check them. | | | -- Enry |

| Posted: | | | | If distributor is moved to its own field, as has also been suggested a number of times, then studios coudl be part of the film profile. I would be great to have correcxtions on one release of a movie propagate on all releases/regions. |

I was under the impression that the main thrust was to separate out "DVD Distributor" to its own field but leave the other fields the same. The Theatrical Distributor will still vary between countries so only if all three were separated would this be appropriate. | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |

This could get very messy, especially for animated features with localized cast Also, it would be more difficult for the casual user to make new profiles. You will have to search through an online db (most likely after an original title that is unknown to you. Like the original title for Seven Samurai or something) before you can connect the movie profile to the dvd profile I'm not against the idea, but I'm not very enthusiastic about it either | | | The colour of her eyes, were the colour of insanity |

While "Bad submissions will cause a lot more damage than they do currently" [quote: northbloke] it is VERY true that "...more eyes would check them" [quote: enrywiki]
Regional variations among animated features would make things a bit tricky though. I'm sure that by DVD Profiler v4 all of these problems will be solved though. I have much confidence in Ken. Ken rockx!! | | | Peter

| Posted: | | | | i'd have to shoot this one down... this is dvd profiler, not movie profiler... and what this is getting out makes everything more complicated, which will detract from value. | | | -JoN |

| Posted: | | | | I'm all for this (and always have been). It would streamline the db no end, it would help with cast/crew linking, it would mean an end to searching each region for TV cast & crew data. As I have said previously, could it be possible for the user to decide which profiles to link to which profiles. eg I have the UK release of 24: Season 6. I can then choose to link the cast & crew (and only the cast & crew) to the US profile, the Canadian Profile & The Australian profile so that any updates to those will show when I update (and similarly any corrections would go to those profiles). Not sure if this would really be workable in practice but it would enable those who want to keep their profiles isolated to do so. Sure there are going to be local execptions such as anime. But even for those the core Japanese cast will be the same, it just has to have the local language attached to it. Genre is a difficult one as everyone is unlikely to agree, so it either goes with the majority or is taken out of the db and localised. Yes, this is DVD Profiler not Movie profiler, but I thought that change occured when we started getting rid of the DVD distributor in favour of the production companies |
