Samsung Blu-Ray Players Called Defective

NEWARK (CN) - Samsung Electronics sells defective Blu-Ray Disc Players that "will not play numerous Blu-ray disc titles," a class-action complaint claims in Federal Court. Lead attorneys Chimicles & Tikellis, of Haverford, Pa., claim Samsung has sold the defective goods since June 2006, knowing they are defective, and that Samsung's defective players account for "32 percent of set-top player sales."

Not so funny if you're the unlucky owner of a 1200...

Interesting....I thought on looking that this was going to be a class action suit about profile 1.1 discs not having certain extras being readable (which will no doubt happen before long), but he seems to be having a problem with discs not being readable at all.

The 1200 is notorious for not playing all discs.

The result of this class action lawsuit is that all members of the class will receive a free firmware upgrade disc, and the lawyers will make millions of dollars.

As for a class action suit on Blu-ray profiles, I don't see how that can happen, because it is just a feature set for the players. It is as much grounds for a lawsuit as being able to sue for not having internal decoding for all sound formats, or only doing 720P or 1080i (just as examples).

I'm not so sure about this, all you have to do is find a court that accepts the action and off you go, the rest depends on the lawyers and the jury.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Please note that goblin did not include "common sense" - for a very good reason.  It's not common.

I no longer have any faith that Samsung is capable of fixing the problem. If they were, they would already have issued a firmware to take care of it. Instead they go about it one disc at a time, breaking things that once worked while doing it...

They should opt to replace all owners with the 1400 model, at least it will play the films.

Well, class action suits do need to be certified as such by a judge, and there usually needs to be a point of dispute to get past the filing by plaintiff and response from the defendent that proper box labeling would cover.

Maybe when the 1200 was a current product since it was the second player released if I remember, and the cheapest at the time... But not now.

And from the European point of view it doesn't even make sense.
But we are talking about the US lawsystem here. Where (as an urban myth says) a microwave manufacturer was sued for not writing into the manuals that you are not supposed to put live animals into the microwave, at least not if you want to see them again alive.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!

And now we have a zillion odd warning labels because people sued the product's company.  Like "Do not iron clothes on body" or a letter opener with "Caution: Safety goggles recommended."
