| Posted: | | | | I'm curious if they'll start removing region locks on titles once they've had their theatrical releases worlwide.
Meaning, if a title is released on Blu-ray in North America that hasn't been released theatrically everywhere it will obviously be region locked. A year later, when it's been released everywhere, will future pressings of that release be region free?
Good God how I hate this region coding crap.

Meaning it's part of the spec and no studio worldwide should include region coding after one year? If this is the case, this is fantastic news and something that should have been pointed out a lot more by the BDA. HD DVD being region free by default was my #1 reason for getting an HD DVD player last year. I'll see if I can Google and find out for sure if this is the case. Hmm... so the BDA isn't enforcing the rule of 1 year then. Wonderful. KM | | | Tags, tags, bo bags, banana fana fo fags, mi my mo mags, TAGS! Dolly's not alone. You can also clone profiles. You've got questions? You've got answers? Take the DVD Profiler Wiki for a spin. |

KM Or they have not had any recent productions runs. Also, this May has not hit so last may is not a year. | | | Signature banned: Reason out of date... |

Or they have not had any recent productions runs. Also, this May has not hit so last may is not a year. What I found when Googling was that the 1 year thing applies to movies recently released in theaters, and that catalogue titles are supposed to be region free from the start. None of what I found was official though, just people quoting articles and other people, never anything from the BDA directly. Like this: http://forums.highdefdigest.com/showthread.php?t=2225But, if that is accurate and Fox titles are indeed region locked, then BDA aren't enforcing their own rule. Which is a pity. It's still better than not having anything in place encouraging publishers to go region free, but I was hoping there for a bit that the one year thing would be part of the spec and strictly enforced. Fox region-locks all their catalog titles, it's pretty easy to verify at places like http://www.blurayregioncodes.com/Or straight from the source: Fox Blu-ray Disc Catalog titles in Q1 2008"Fox Home Entertainment have announced the US Region A Blu-ray Disc release of six catalog titles over January, February and March 2008. Priced at $39.98 SRP each, the titles are as follows…" | | | Erik

| Posted: | | | | I found this posted on a message board by a moderator, I am awaiting word on an offiical link.. Quote: Any BD can be region locked. Even catalog titles (look at Fox). But, the BDA rule is the production run of the same SKU must become region free after 12 months.
I've always been a bit confused why they wouldn't be forced to change the SKU because its a different product (no RC) thus allowing them to re-introduce the RC. A sort of RC catch-22. | | | Signature banned: Reason out of date... |

| Posted: | | | | This is what I got back... I guess "time will tell" Quote: The BDA rules, if we could look at them.
There is definitely a timeout rule about RC on discs, but the actual wording is what I'm vague about.
The idea is that for single authoring the studio must unlock it after 12 months. BUT, they are free to introduce a new authoring (special edition, etc.) that can reset the clock.
The problem is, what constitutes a change in the offering from a rule perspective? Calling it a special edition and changing the insert shouldn't be enough. A SKU change would be needed. But, if the RC changes you'd think the studio would have to change the SKU so there would be a definitive way of telling the difference.
And changing the SKU means they could lock it again, so the rule seems open to cheating. But, I expect that the studio would be harrassed in public for such a sleazy trick, and that would likely stop it from happening. | | | Signature banned: Reason out of date... |

A lot of titles that are locked in "A" are A/B/C in Europe. It varies a bit too, though. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is locked in the US and seemingly the UK, Germany, etc. Not here in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. The whole A/B/C thing needs to vanish as I've often said, and if Universal and Warner eventually adopts it... oy vey. | | | Erik

I bought a Region A player just to be on the safe side. And if it turns out that a lot of interesting titles get released in Region B only, I've got the option to have my Samsung 1400 fitted with the A/B mod. But I doubt that'll be necessary... | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |
