| Posted: | | | | Does anyone know if and when the prices of the blu-ray players will drop below $400? I don't want to really pay that much for a dvd player and with the "war" being over I would have thought they would have start to go down. | | | We're on a mission from God.

No more competition, no reason to cut prices. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

| Posted: | | | | Prices are going up right now due to the weakness of the dollar, not because the "war" is over. There is plenty of competition....Sony, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Pioneer and Denon are all making Blu-ray players (and others, I'm sure). Unless you believe in some kind of a conspiracy theory, over time, prices will be driven down by these competing companies as well as further penetration of the masses. Will it happen overnight....no. But it will happen, just like with standard DVD. I paid $1400.00 for my first DVD player! | | | Hal | | | Last edited: by hal9g |

While that might be true in the short term, in the long run prices will probably come down. The longer the Blu-Ray technology is out manufacturers will find less expensive ways to produce Blu-Ray players (and discs) as: 1. Internal components become more readily available 2. New & better ways are developed to manufacture existing technology Making everything, in a word: cheaper. EDIT: Darn you hal9g!! You just beat me. | | | Peter

Since you can get a Blu-ray player right at the $400 price point right now, expect them to be cheaper come November 28th (at least in the USofA). There's no reason to expect price drops until then.
And I paid $450 for my first DVD player, and that was with a 10% open-box discount. | | | Last edited: by nolesrule |

| Posted: | | | | Well, of course the prices will drop over time. That happens with pretty much all products. My comments were in response to the OP that was expecting prices to start dropping immediately because the "war" was over.
As to the notion of DVD's being "competition", I can see the argument and it has some logic but I don't think it matters to the BD. While DVDs still make up the majority of film purchases I wouldn't exactly consider them competition in the same way HD DVD was compeition. Do luxury car makers adjust their prices because cheap budget cars out sell them? Definitely not. You can still drive from point A to point B whether you purchase the cheap car or the luxury car. And similarly, you can still watch the same movie whether you purchase it on DVD or Blu-ray. You just get a higher end experience with the luxury car (or Blu-ray in this case). | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

| Posted: | | | | Actually I would expect there to be plenty of deals on the current gen players when new models come out over the summer, and then as nolesrules noted, come holiday time next year you are bound to get price drops, discounts, coupons, and possibly even another free disc offer... | | | -JoN |

| Posted: | | | | Thanks everyone for the replies. I recently got myself a 32" HDTV for my small apartment and now I need a blu-ray player. Luckly when I bought my (new) dvd player a few years ago it had a setting for 16:9 tvs and progressive scan, but blu would be nice too. | | | We're on a mission from God.

| Posted: | | | | The only MSRPs that are higher than currently available players are on higher-featured players (Profile 1.1 or 2.0) that will be released in the near future. If you are referring to current-released player prices going up, then blame the retailers, since the MSRP has not changed. |
