| Posted: | | | | Listen up, audiophiles -- we know you've already pored over Universal's Blu-ray plans, but for those thirsting for more details in the world of audio, you've found your oasis. Sitting down with The Man Room, Universal made clear that its first wave of BD releases on July 22nd (all films from The Mummy franchise) would actually include Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS-HD Master Audio tracks. Yep, that means you'll be getting more than just a lackadaisical port should you snap these up on Blu-ray. The studio also mentioned that it was looking forward to DTS-HD MA becoming "the Blu-ray standard" at its headquarters, so we're hoping to see (er, hear) a lot more lossless from these guys in the near future.

| Posted: | | | | Depends what you mean by "handle". I'm fairly certain most can at least bitstream it out to your AVR, which can hopefully decode it, but not all of them. Whether they can decode it themselves, I'd doubt anything but the highest of high-end players can do that. But I'm far from any expert and speaking from mostly Google-fu on the matter and not actual experience.
My player (though it's a dual format player) is currently awaiting a firmware update to allow either onboard decoding or bitstreaming of the DTS HD codec (nobody is certain if it will be one or the other or both). I'd guess it's going to be bitstream only and since my AVR can't decode any of the newer HD audio it won't matter for me anyway. Hopefully I'll be upgrading my AVR to something that can in the near future, but that will depend on whether we're heading into another "depression" here in the good ole U.S. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams | | | Last edited: by Vega |

Guess I'll have to get a Panasonic DMP-BD50 at the end of the year. Probably an excellent choice. I couldn't wait and got the DMP-BD30. Very happy with it. | | | View my collection at http://www.chriskepolis.be/home/dvd.htm

| Posted: | | | | There are only two normally price players that can handle DTS HD Master & True HD. That's above mentioned Panasonic-BD30 which goes for about 399€ and the Samsung BD-P1400 (which I own) which cost about 299€. The new, more expensive Panasonic will also be able to handle it. The Sony BDP-S 500 is only able to handle True HD but not DTS HD Master. (goes for around 500€).
Further more I want to add that I highly doubt that Universal will release their discs in DTS HD as they used Dolby Digital Plus on their HD-DVD's. That indicates that they would be inclined to use True HD on their Blu Ray as this is a Dolby Product. | | | Check out my Youtube channel under https://www.youtube.com/user/alittleolder |

| Posted: | | | | Addendum: I meant there are 2 Players that can handle it in Bitstream, so that the receiver displays what format it is. Even the PS3 can now output those formats but only in PCM. | | | Check out my Youtube channel under https://www.youtube.com/user/alittleolder |

| Posted: | | | | Finally I know. Universal really has jumped ship from Dolby to DTS.
Instead of the DD Plus or DD True HD Soundtracks their Blu Ray are really gonna contain DTS Sound.
Since DTS isn't really better than True HD I guess there was another pay off. Of which we had many lately in this business | | | Check out my Youtube channel under https://www.youtube.com/user/alittleolder |
