When voting a comment in the thread is not a sin Would specialy like to read comments from those that do not like the idea, ore have other solutions

Have submitted some cover scans and got to say I am not to impressed with how the resizing, and saving is done.

[1]When you save it localy, it shud be no need to compress it (if you worry about size of database then add in some alert message for the user, ore option to save it as PNG-24bit ore compressed jpg).
Most people have enough space now to have it save in better quality, ore at least to have the option when scaning in the covers.

[2]Same basicaly goes for the submitted images.
I can understand the need to set a max size etc. to keep the online databse size down. But how about adding a preview option when you are submitting cover scans. With that I mean that when you submit the new cover scans you get to see how the downsized version will look like, and then the option to downsize them to this size yourself, and past it into the submission preview, ore use the one dislayed.
This shud be able to improve many of the cover scans submitted since the compression and downsizing can do some strange things to the scans when submiting.

I would like that kind of option too. I have added some scans myself that are crystalclear and with the right colors locally, but after submitting I think : What? that wasn't how it's really was here.

As long as the images are within the dimension requirements 500x700 and no larger than 195.3k then there will be no further compression done by Invelos upon submission. I scan as 48-bit color uncompressed tiffs at 600dpi with descreening filter set and medium sharpening with an Epson Perfection 2400. I edit the tiffs in Photoshop CS2 and resize in 500 pixel increments to within 500x700 + or - either way without going over 500 or 700. I then "save for web" and reduce the file size to the closest I can get to 195.3k without going over.

That is more ore less my point with the option to do the downsizing yourself when submitting 8ballMax. Then you cud do this for the submitted ones and get better quality than what you get now with the downsizing that is done automagicaly, but still keep higher resolution cover scans in your own database.

Now that screens are getting bigger and you get higher resolution 500x700 can get a bit to smal.

Edit:
It cud then probably be a nice extra if you got informed in the preview window for cover submission:
"Scan can have a max width of 500px and max height of 700px, file size shud be under 195,3KB"

I think the user SHOULD be able to save images in the LOCAL Database Profiler in whatever size he/she wants and not have Profiler automatically resize them.  I understand and accept the need to restrict the size of the images online, there is no need to do so locally.  Especially since the online system automatically resizes any contributed images, there's no real reason to do it locally, too.

I'd like to be able to cut and paste my large images into the local database without Profiler reducing the size.  The only way around this now is to copy the larger images into the My Documents/DVD Profiler/Databases/Default/Images directory outside of Profiler.  The problem with this deals with file naming:  There is no easy way to capture the filename when you are dealing with a profile that uses Disc ID.  If the profile has a UPC/EAN you can click on DVD/Change UPC and copy the UPC data that's in the field then rename the image file accordingly.  But since you can't manually change the DiscID data in that field, there's no easy way to capture the DiscID.  If you have a lot of TV series with individual disc images, this becomes really annoying.

I know that problem, too.

One workaround is to actually paste it in DVDP, close the profile, open the image folder and sort by changed date descending. Then the newest file is the one you want to replace.

But I am alos in favour of the idea that when I use the "open file" option in the cover editor that DVD does not(!) change the file at all.

Another way, which I only recently discovered, is to open the profile and if you go to the Discs tab you can copy the value of the DiscID.  If I'm doing a TV set, I can get all of the DiscIDs from the parent profile this way (remembering to add "I" to the value from the DiscID field) which I copy into a Notepad file.  But this requires that you open the profile to get to the DiscID -- and if the parent profile doesn't include the DiscIDs (and everyone doesn't include the DiscIDs like they're supposed to according to the rules) you have to open all the child profiles.  It would be much easier if we could just cut and paste our large images into the profile without Profiler resizing them.

Ahhh...but I don't keep the 500x700 images locally Robert. After submitting the 500x700 images I then go back and resize the original saved tiff to 800 x whatever and save those locally and on my phpDVDProfiler site .

But you still have to admit that it's a pain having to manually overwrite your local images instead of Profiler just leaving them alone when you paste them in. So that side of the request at least is a good idea.

Not at all, both 8Ball and myself store images that are much higher quality than that produced by Invelos servers, I suspect hius run about like mine done approximately 1.5 MB per image. Now it would be nice if Invelos would accomodate these extremely high quality images, but that is unrealistic. What 8Ball and i do is done based on the choice we have made in terms of what we deal with locally, that being true I for one expect to pay a small price in convenience to keep the images to my standards. Like i said it would be nice if invelos met my standards, but just a tad  unrealistic.

Having DVDProfiler saving the file uncompressed, ore at least in PNG-24 without having to work around it by looking it up by ID and navigating to folders to save it would be alot easier. At least in my opinion.

That you might not see the need for the preview and option to then add manualy resized versions I can understand though.

I do not see why Invelos shud not give the option to save the images in what ever size and quality you want localy. That they wanna keep the size down when it comes to the submitted versions that are stored in the online database and distributed one can clearly understand.

I am not saying that they shud change the size of the submitted covers, ore size limits on these. But that they shud leave the covers you import yourself alone and save them without downsizing ore compressing them. At least give you the option.

@ Robert

I understand what you are saying Robert and it's not a bad request. But, at least for me, this isn't a problem as I don't use DVD Profiler's image editing or copy/pasting.

@ North

Actually it's not a pain at all. When I "save to web" Photoshop remembers my working directories and it saves directly to the DVDP image directory. Since I have the DVD in hand all I do is begin typing in the UPC number and it will reach the UPC I wish to overwrite and click save.

I only have a problem with this because it's a pain to type in the DiscID when that's what the filename requires.  When I have done this manually, I have often made a mistake and put a file into the image directory that isn't linked to the profile.  Then I've got to go back and do it all over again.

If I could copy the DiscID data the same way I can the UPC data, I can be sure that the name I give to the image file will link to the profile I want -- since I've gotten the data from the profile itself and not by manually typing it.

you could do it this way:
Save the cover front and back in dvd profiler. The date changes to the most recent.
Now you could the save as from your photo editor, select the detailed list and sort the date column
your cover that you want to save is now on top of the file list. select the appropriate front or back cover:
###########f
###########b
this way you don't have to remember disc-id or EAN/UPC barcodes
