When Common Names Flip |

| Posted: | | | | Consider the following hypothetical situation:
I have an actor whose common name is Tom/Q./Smith. He is frequently credited as Tom//Smith. The Credits lookup says Tom/Q./Smith 25/45 and Tom//Smith 24/44. I have a Common Name entry for Tom/Q./Smith, and use "Credited As" on those profiles where he is credited as Tom//Smith.
A couple of his old movies get released wherein he is featured as Tom//Smith, making the Credit lookup go to Tom/Q./Smith 25/45 and Tom//Smith 26/46.
I would like to change the Common name in my local to match the data given by the Credits lookup, so I try to just edit the Common Name.
The problem is that that doesn't have the effect I want. I want all of the profiles that have him as simply Tom/Q./Smith [ ] changed to be entries as Tom//Smith [Tom Q. Smith] and all of the entries that have him as Tom/Q./Smith [Tom Smith] changed to be entries as Tom//Smith [ ] Ie. to fiddle the "Credited As" field for all of his entries to keep the same (verified) credits.
Does any of that make sense? I think it may come up more frequently as more data is verified and corrected in the master online database.
An option to do this would be useful, I think. | | | -fred |

| Posted: | | | | I agree in principle, but I think the situation needs a bigger solution than the one you propose because once you've changed all the common names, you still need to contribute them and get them voted on etc. I think a better solution may be an online cast & crew database, where we can submit common name changes and have them filter through to all affected profiles automatically rather than have them contributed individually and maybe not catch all of them. |

My understanding is that the online CLT will adjust itself automatically as the counts vary. But you made a critical comment.

That makes it purely a local choice.
A lot of users make a big to do abnout usability versus accuracy. Usability is nearly always something that is defined by the USER, and is going to be different with each and every user, which is why the Online should be accuracy centered., unfortunately depending on perspectives sometimes accuracy can be variable as well, which is why Rules were created.

That makes it purely a local choice. Sorry, Skip. I had thought that the sentence just before the section you quoted was sufficient to indicate that I was only interested in a convenience feature for local databases, where I said Quote: I would like to change the Common name in my local to match the data given by the Credits lookup, so I try to just edit the Common Name. An option to do this would be useful, I think. Yes, it would be handy to be able to change the common name without changing the Credited As. Being able to do this within the program would be great indeed. You can get pretty close to this ability using the Name Variants plugin. You will most likely have to turn off the exclusion part of the plugin (if there's no recent activity in your database that brings up the variants in question). It will allow you assign a new common name. If you have Tom//Smith [Tom C. Smith] and you change the common name to Tom C. Smith, you do run into the situation where you have Tom/C./Smith [Tom C. Smith]. In that case, you have to edit each entry to reset the name so it becomes Tom/C./Smith []. A bit of a hack. Again, I agree that your feature request would be a great addition to the program. | | | ...James

| Posted: | | | | Quoting FredLooks: Quote: An option to do this would be useful, I think. It would, indeed. The Name Variants plugin as suggested by James helps - it's an excellent tool! - but this should indeed be an option in the program itself, especially now that "common names" are shifting almost every day. Quoting skipnet50: Quote: That makes it purely a local choice. I'm sorry, but it's not. If the "common name" in this hypothetical situation would indeed have changed from Tom Q. Smith to Tom Smith, any profiles that had previously been submitted with TQS as the common name would then need to be corrected using TS as the common name. That wouldn't be a local choice at all: those online profiles would need to be corrected per the rules. Quoting skipnet50: Quote: My understanding is that the online CLT will adjust itself automatically as the counts vary. This sounds pretty vague, so let me point out there's no "magical", automatic adjustment whatsoever. The only change in the CLT results comes from users manually correcting and adding cast and crew data, one profile at a time. Nothing more. The CLT just shows you the number of profiles containing the name variant you've searched on, drawing primarily from the "credited as" field, and if that's empty, then from the name field(s). | | | Last edited: by T!M |

@m.cellophane&T!M: Yeah, frankly I was thinking of the Name Variants tool when I first ran into this issue (my local common was backwards to the online common). The problem was I didn't have two names, I only had the one, which I wanted to change as though there were one.
Actually, now that I think of it, I should have created a new name the way I wanted it, assigned it to one of the profiles, and then used the Names Variant tool to merge them.
grrrrr. now I think of it.
I'd still like to see something like this, but it's backed down my priority list quite a bit. (Thanks to Goodguy!) | | | -fred |

My understanding is that the online CLT will adjust itself automatically as the counts vary. The idea of the CLT is good, but a big disadvantage is that it just counts numbers. A lot of smaller localities don't have a big community of active contributors, so they copy & paste cast from other releases. So sometimes the correct name has 4 profiles while the wrong name has 16 profiles. A nice exaple is "William Petersen" / "William L. Petersen" and his apperance in CSI: There are about 200 CSI (Las Vegas) -profiles worldwide. And William Petersen is IN EVERY SEASON credited as "William Petersen". But when you use the CLT it shows for "William L. Petersen" 173 titles (254 profiles) And 124 (!) profiles are CSI-related profiles! Which means 124 contain wrong data that counts in the CLT for the choice of the common name. |
