| Posted: | | | | Probably a stupid idea, but the fact that there are in the database actors that have Jr. in their name, I thought it would be neat to have a mergefunction of some sort to merge i.e Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Cuba Gooding Jr. since they're both listed in the base that way, and they are the same person except for the spelling with a comma. Even if one spelling is the one we accepted as common name, it would be great to maybe have some kind of merge function. I haven't tought yet of how to use the credited as function to this issue, but I will boil my head to think of a solution. | | | "What's God?" To solve that, I used the excellent plugin Database Query, and search on ", Jr." in the last name field, and removed all the commas. Just took five minutes for the whole operation. | | | Images from movies |

You can use my Name Variants plugin to find and merge similar names that most likely refer to the same person. | | | Matthias |

It will take longer than 5 minutes then but has the advantage of being accurate. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I prefer to use only one name for each actor and have no linking problem. I also used database query plugin ( ) to remove all "credited as" entries and Goodguy's name variants ( ) to have a clean list without duplicates. | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

Feel free to do whatever you like with your local database. You just shouldn't contribute such data because it doesn't match the actual credits, and that is still the No.1 goal of this main database. But since you don't bother to contribute anyway this shouldn't be a problem. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

| Posted: | | | | I would still like to see either a rules change to specify a standard for punctuation of suffixes or a programmatic solution that treats names the same regardless of punctuation to achieve automatic linking on those names.
We shouldn't have to merge identical names. |

Agreed on that. But since the rules are as they are at the moment we're bound to "exactly as credited", with the option to use "credited as" if there should be a difference between the credit at hand and the most credited variant. If one fine day the database is in the state it is supposed to be (probably a monday ) there should be no difference to your request. It's just that I don't think that we'll ever reach the destination so a standard is probably the best way to reach consistency. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! What do you want to prove with this post ? You perfectly know that I do not contribute, as you are among those who reproach me to say always the same thing. And when I don't write about rules and contributions, you " remember" me how it works !!! Or you are still in the same mood as in your voluntarily hurting last PM... I think I even prefered when you called me a blackmailer... | | | Images from movies |

| Posted: | | | | Although it can be read the way you read it surfeur, it can also be read using the plural "you" & is a beneficial reminder to newer users who may store their data the same way as you.
Maybe it would've been better to say it as follows -
"You (anyone) just shouldn't contribute such data because it doesn't match the actual credits, and that is still the No.1 goal of this main database." |

You are right, it's better like that, perhaps that was what goblin meant... | | | Images from movies |

Totally off-topic, but since surfeur51 chose to turn this into something personal and there might be people who might understand this as he wrote it here's the complete correspondence that he was refering to. ...then the rules needs to be changed, that's the bottom line!
I suppose that after such an opinion, users like Skipnet50 will soon jump on you. He is VERY proud to be the father of those rules and for him it is a CRIME to say anything against them. Not quite correct, even Skip agrees that the rules need to be fixed (at least I understood him that way). What he and several other users (me included) don't like is that some users break the rules intentionally. Requesting a change is one thing, publicly announcing to break the rules is something completely different.
Please, be serious. You will never find anything where I asked to break the rules. I just ask that rules should be modified to correct typos, and use common sense when odd issues appear. For that Skip compared me with gestapo and men of Vichy. And that is not an old thing, he did it again by PM two weeks ago, explaining that he was correct from an american point of view.
I never understood why you are fascinated by this guy, and I'm sorry you made him your idol.
Have anyway a good afternoon. Quoting goblinsdoitall: Quote: Oh, I wasn't exactly writing about you, but if you think the shoe fits you. I personally don't think so.
Skip is not my idol, it just happens that we have the same opinion in some cases. I still think of me as being strictly neutral. But possibly that's only me, when I look through my recent postings I have to realize that I'm quite often on the lines of Skip. But other then users like Hal, or you I'm not automatically in opposition if Skip writes something, I read what he has to say first and if it makes sense I agree, if not I don't. The same goes for your or Hal's or any others postings.
Greetings to France

Even when he speaks of gestapo and Vichy... In your answer, you just forgot to speak of the main point that poisons the relationship between him and me... As long as he will PM me to repeat he really means it, it will be impossible for me to discuss in a normal way with him. I take your silence as an approval, I suppose, as you say, it makes sense to you, and, I'm sorry, but under those circumstances, your greetings have not much value.
Have a good evening.
Yves
PS. About the shoe that fits or not me, it seems that you answered to me, not to anybody else. Quoting goblinsdoitall: Quote: Sorry if I got something wrong again. But your answer seems somewhat paranoid to me. So would you please stop tearing my statements out of their context and interpreting something I neither wrote nor meant, as you very well know. I understand that you got terribly hurt by Skip, and accidentaly by me too. I asked you accept my apologies for that, obviously this was asked too much. The main difference between you and me is that I live in the present looking for the future, you seem to live in the past neither willing to forgive a mistake, nor to see that you probably made some too.
So what am I supposed to say, ... it wasn't me who compared you with criminals, and believe me for a German the comparison to the GeStaPo really is an insult that is hardly to surpass. I see no excuse for Skip concerning these insults, but for me this doesn't invalid Skip's opinion in total. I very well see that he is concerned about the consistency of the database. As long as he stays issue-related with his argument noone really can deny that (except for you and Hal of course). And there we have a point that I cannot understand at all, why is it that someone gets so angry about someone that he stops seeing that this "someone" still might have something valuable to say. The way I see it is this attitude that makes war possible.
So once more I'm neither on your side, nor on Skip's, I'm solely on my side. I don't need and don't have any allies in this forum, it's a hobby, not war. As I wrote before: I'm always in for a good discussion as long as it stays fair, so personal insults will not be supported or written by me (at least not on purpose).
Have a good night.
Michael Once more: Surfeur, not everything I write is directly written for you or to be understood as an attack on you. Unlike your personal opinion I really have more important things to think about than you and how to hurt you. But as I wrote on another occasion: "It's easy to offend someone who wants to be offended" or in your case: people looking for hurtful remarks will find them everywhere. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But I think the red one you got is well deserved. When you think you have understood something, you overreact and call publictly, as you yet did a first time, though you should try to read and see if things can't be read in another manner that you did... | | | Images from movies |

| Posted: | | | | Surfeur, not needed, thank you. I didn't believe it was you, some time ago you wrote that you'd never give me a red arrow again. And whatever you may be, I don't think you're a liar. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?
