In all honesty. I find Home to be really boring. I was invited into the beta a couple months back but have only logged on twice. There's really nothing to do. Hopefully that'll change.

I agree that it's really boring.  Hopefully the full thing will add a bit to it.

Also, you can still visit the mall and pick up a summer home, clothes and furniture for free.  At least it was free last night.  Looks like this stuff will cost down the line so I picked it up now while I could.  Even if it is boring and I may never use it.

When they "activate" home (they released a patch for current testers already) an icon will appear on the XMB in the Network section. Once you choose it, you'll be prompted to d/l home.

If you're online they say you need to "reboot" so the icon will show.

Home is currently down, as is the PS Store (sometimes it loads) as they work on some technical issues. there is no ETA on when it will go live.

I find it weird that the PS3 (in terms of gaming) gets so much blindly positive coverage in this forum. Yes its a good Blu Ray player, so naturally people will discuss its Blu Ray playback and features, but that still doesn't explain the small yet fanatical crew of people here salivating over every game related piece of news - even though it is a monumental failure as a games console - yet that aspect of it is totally overlooked by almost everyone here.

I found this to be an interesting read : Sony didn't intend the PS3 to succeed as a gaming console

I don't think the writer of that article really grasps the situation though. Did Sony really think sacrificing their games division (which is looking to be a sad reality) is a fair price to pay to win the HD optical format war? A war which is not going to see any victors (financially speaking)? Blu Ray is to remain a niche product and will not replace dvd. Even if were to suddenly turn its fortune, the $400 dollar console would not be the ubiquitous blu ray player in every home, the $100 wal-mart player would.

The gaming business that Sony have created over the past 15 years was MUCH more valuable to them than any short lived disc format. It saddens me to think that the dismal PS3 may well be their swansong to gaming.

Have you even played on a PS3. A monumental failure as a game console?!? You have to be kidding. In Europe the PS3 already outsold the XBox 360. Some great, exclusive, games have been released this year and more is on the way with Sony having more in-house and second party developers than Microsoft.

Also i think it's funny that, apparently, now the PS3 is, according to some, only selling as a BR player but during the BR/HD-DVD 'war' i was told most people buying a PS3 would never use it as a BR player. A bit of a contadiction i think. Yes, the XBox 360 has some great games, and Yes in the beginning the PS3 games weren't all greats and i fully admit some early games looked awful when directly compared to the 360 version but with Little Big Planet, Motorstorm 2, Resistance 2 etc. and sonn Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 you can't seriously continue to say the PS3 is a failure as a gaming console.

While I certainly wouldn't call the PS3 a failure as a gaming console, it's a fact that it doesn't even come close to the 360 in terms of total number of quality games.

As of this writing the 360 has a total of 16 games with an average review rating of 90 or higher. The PS3 has a total of 8. If you count platform exclusive titles the 360's total is at 6 and the PS3's total is at 2.

If you expand the review range to include games with an average rating of 80 or higher, the numbers are 120 for the 360, and 69 for the PS3.

Based on their release rate (meaning how fast either console have released games rated 80+ or 90+) the PS3 will never catch up to the 360, as the 360 has a slightly faster release rate of quality games than the PS3.

If you doubt any of the above data, feel free to head over to gamerankings.com and look over the stats yourself.

Now, all of this is NOT to say the PS3 sucks. Far from it. Even with about 50% as many good games as the 360, the PS3 still has still plenty to choose from for most gamers. The point of this post was mostly just to rectify the impression your post left that the PS3 has (or will soon have) a superior stable of games to the 360.

Yes I own one (and have done for over 16 months). Yes. And sadly, no.

I count two - MGS4 (a great game) and LBP (flawed but unique). In fact in its two years I have only really loved two games on this console, Uncharted and MGS4. In two years. Resistance 1 was so bad I have no desire to try Resistance 2. Killzone 2 could be good but I still await reviews. Uncharted 2 should be great, but its a year away.

I buy all multiplatform titles on the 360, because of Xbox Live (and my friends list being 5 times larger on 360), and the fact that no games are any better on the PS3.

PS3 sales for November 08 were 18% lower than November 07. LOWER. 360 sales increased, Wii sales more than doubled. Reason? There are now equally good bluray players for $200. There are better games consoles for $200. There are still no compelling exclusives to sell PS3 hardware.

You need to look at what's happening in industrial terms to Sony, they are in serious trouble and their gaming division may become one of the first casualties. As someone who cherished his PS1 at Xmas 10 years ago, I find it very sad to see how badly Sony have screwed this up.

LBP dismal sales

But anyway back onto topic - Home, I think its utterly dreadful, I have uninstalled it and will never touch it again. What does everyone else think?

Well, here's what Penny-Arcade thinks:

Quote:
The Beta for Playstation home is now available to everyone, and now you know what I know: this is what happens when your marketing department tries to make a game. Here is everything you need to understand about Home, if you should accidentally launch it from your XMB: press and hold the Playstation button in the center of your Dual-Shock or Sixaxis controller. From the menu that appears, select Quit.

There are things about Home that are simply beyond my understanding. Chief among these bizarre maneuvers is the idea that, when manufacturing their flimsy dystopia, they actually ported the pernicious notion of scarcity from our world into their digital one. This is like having the ability to shape being from non-being at the subatomic level, and the first thing you decide to make is AIDS.

If you approach an arcade machine and there is a person standing in front of it, you will not be able to play it. Likewise, if you see people bowling and think that bowling is something you might like to do, you probably wont be able to. Unable to play arcade games like Ice Breakers and Carriage Return the first several times we logged on, these games had begun to take on an epic stature in our minds. These were gushing fonts of liquid fun, habit-forming and dangerous - for the good of our virtual society, the supply had to be controlled. When we were finally able to play them, we learned that they were the equivalent of browser games.

There is nothing about the experience of using Home to suggest that you are actually moving through a single, contiguous environment. It is very clearly a handful of walled off zones, where you are confronted by incessant load screens in a desperate search for stimulation. From the moment you enter one of their ultrahygenic "amusement regions," it's clear that all life has been burned away. You get the sense that this is a place in which no interesting thing could ever happen.

There is already a growing school of Home apologetics, fostered by the same Order of Perpetual Masochism that lauded the rumble-free Sixaxis at launch and suggested, hilariously, that Lair and Heavenly Sword were videogames. They're under the impression that because something is free, this places it on some golden dais beyond censure. It's no virtue to give away something that no-one in their right mind would buy. Sony has no idea what this world is for, and that ambiguity infuses every simulated millimeter of it.

This is the terrible secret that roils beneath their false universe: it is nothing more than a cumbersome menu, a rampart over which you must hoist yourself to accomplish the most basic tasks.

I've discovered on Home that if you're a female, you'll get tons of attention.  If you're a guy, you might as well remain in your ghost form.  Which is all fine by me because chatting with random strangers while dancing isn't my idea of a fun evening.  I'm fine playing a game.  I don't even mind conversing with the other players while doing so.  But at least with a game you have something to do while talking to your friends.

That's not whole Europe, and remember they have a full year headstart.

That's you personal choice but those games aren't better on the 360 and can easily be played on the PS3 as well.

I own a 360 and personally i prefer to play multi platform games on the PS3, i only think some people are very negative towards the PS3. Of course the 360 has more, higher ranked, games. It's been out longer and reviews are always opinion. Why else would the PS3 version of Prince of Persia be ranked higher thasn the 360 version. I doubt the PS3 version is actually better (PS3 86.3 vs 360 82.1)
