Odd one this - lots of work with questionable benefits and probably won't be done in a month of Sundays. Regardless, I'm going to request it anyway.

I think that many of us have been aware of DVD Profiler's reliance on IE for some time. I recently discovered that installing IE6 under Wine/Linux improves functionality on that platform, showing the dependence on the external program. I'm also aware that IEs rendering engine (Trident) currently has several active versions of varying quality. The issues that getting DVDP to work with multiple versions may or may not be negligible and may or may not provide issues for plugin developers / custom HTML windows.

Inspired largely by my selfish desire to improve performance on non-supported platforms, I'm wondering about the benefits of dispensing with Trident altogether and DVDP using an embedded rendering engine such as Gecko. The benefits of using a package of known version should make testing easier and more reliable, and the quality of many engines such as Gecko is that you can choose one with improved standard support (including CSS3 support for improved plugin design).

Thoughts?

Stuart

Edit: Forgot to add couple of links showing resource available for such work:
General embedding of Gecko
Using Gecko with Delphi
This is a sig... ... ... yay...

Don't understand? Maybe DVDProfilerWiki.org does!

Independence from IE would be a big improvement for DVD Profiler.

Great idea!

It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I hate to do this but:

Unfortunately, I can't use DVDprofiler at the moment due to lack of a Windows computer.

Oh I like that idea, anything to get away from using IE as much as possible.

I admit that I have no real experience with Gecko, but the IE programming interface (both COM and scripting) is very reliable and it remains consistent even through major version changes. Furthermore it is readily available on every Windows platform - and lets face it: DVDProfiler is a Windows program and will most likely remain so.

So as someone who is fairly active in both plugin and HTML section programming, I have no need for Gecko, and I would strongly object against replacing the IE engine with Gecko.
