I would like to see implemented an ability to further customise the online collection page. At the moment, we can do very little to customise this and yet a huge amount to customise reports for printing.

I have my DVD collection stowed away in suspension draws and all catalogued, making use of the very useful Location (for drawer letter) and Slot fields in DVD Profiler. This means I normally print out a list of my collection at regular intervals so that I can find a DVD when I need to.

Given that we probably all add to our collections on a regular basis, printing a report all the time is not an ideal situation. The fact that many of us have web-enabled portable devices means that we can access our online collection pages quite easily.

I used to have DVD Profiler Mobile, but I no longer have a Windows mobile phone. I can, however, access my online collection through my iPod Touch's browser, but... I can't see the Location and Slot fields on the online collection page.

A simple checkbox listing available database fields for inclusion on the Online Collection page would take care of this and I'm sure would satisfy most peoples' customisation requirements. It doesn't have to do anything special with the formatting really - just show the fields selected on a profile by profile basis.

Having access to this Online Collection page is a key part of DVD Profiler for me, because it allows remote access to view my collection details. I just wish we could customise the page a bit, given how much attention there is to other reporting features in the software.

Failing a desire to implement that, could the online collection be made available as an RSS feed, so we can create our own reports, without having to export and upload the database XML each time a change is made to our collections?

It's been a while since the announcement, but Invelos have said they're working on something called DVD Profiler Online Plus (or DPO Plus) that will be a more robust online representation of your collection.

Read more here: http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=350265&PageNum=1

In the meantime, you can use PHP DVD Profiler. It's a homebrew solution that uses PHP to display your DVD Profiler collection in a more versatile way. I don't use it, so I don't know for sure if it can show the location slot, but having had a look at what it can do I'd be very surprised if it couldn't display the location.

Here's the forum where you can download PHP DVD Profiler as well as discuss its uses::

And here's an example of what it can do:

Dolly's not alone. You can also clone profiles.

Another nice script (like phpDVDProfiler you will need your own webspace with PHP and MySQL) is phpMyProfiler.

So far I don't use it myself, but here's manura's collection as an example.

Thanks all for your feedback and suggestions.

@Astrakan
Thanks for the links. phpDVDProfiler looks similar to what I was considering doing (only a cut-down version and in ColdFusion, my preferred web app language). http://www.johnd.org.au/installingphpdvdprofiler/index.htm has just confirmed the way I was considering making this work. I may yet do this for my own sanity. Strictly speaking, I only need the title and location, both of which I can get from the export XML and import into a database. It's just a shame that we can't just grab this XML feed live from our online collections.

@Agrare
Yes, thanks for that. I saw that from the link that Astrakan included. Could be some time off though, I bet. I took a hint from the posting and won't be asking about time scales. ;-)

@Muckl
A Helge Schneider fan, eh? I must be one of his few English fans. Saw him in Berlin last year. Very good live gig! Jagd auf Nihil Baxter is probably the strangest film I have ever seen.

"Fitze, Fitze, Fatze", usw.
