Wouldn't it be a good idea to expand the sharing functions and  make a sort of "client/server" system available? Here's my idea in detail:

DVD Profiler is running on a server with a shared database. One or more client PCs in the network (a  desktop and a notebook f.e.) run also DVD Profiler. They use the shared database from the server. What is not possible today is, to really have full access to the database, add new DVDs, edit existing entries and do all the stuff is possible running a conventional DBVD Profile installation on the local harddrive.

And here's the reason why I need server access. Normally I work on my desktop in the office when entering data, DVDs and printing reports. But when I'm updating and checking the movies on my media server I sit in front of my TV using the notebook as a client. Everytime I switch from desktop to notebook and back to the desktop again I always have to export and re-import the database. Havind more than 1100 moviel this is a time consuming task.

Goto the Release Notes for 3.6 and look for this picture:

Well Mithi,

this is a nive picture but my dream is "bigger". Release 3.6 enables us to "look" at a central database but NOT edit it, generate reports... So my request is a full functional "front end" that is accessing a central database. Since Microsoft is offering MS SQL Server 2005 Express it should be possible to split the application in 2 parts: a front end and a back end (SQL database).

I know, I know, I know... This is a major undertaking. But I believe this is going to make your product future savvy.

What does write-access mean to you?    Again, go to the Release Notes, read them and then try it out yourself...

Won't happen. The DB is encrypted and will in all likely-hood stay that way, so Profiler itself has to act as the server.

We'll expand the edit functions over time.  However, there are already some additional functions built in that are cool for home theater pc setups.  For instance, any connected copy (server or client) of DVD Profiler can command the other connected copies to select a particular DVD.  You can do this via the DVD->Select on Remote command.  This command lets you select on the server, on a particular client, or on all connected copies.

A shortcut to select on all connected clients is Alt + Double-click on the entry in your list.

DVD Profiler for iPhone/iPad will support additional remote commands.  Server support for these is built into 3.6.  We'll post more when the i-versions are close.

Would you, say, be able to invoke a command line call from the remote?

That would TOTALLY ROCK in my book.

And invalidate my Mac Mini purchase for an iPad app.

That's not true (for old versions). The database they are using is called DBISAM. As a coincidence we had been using DBISAM at my last job. i just opened the database files and was able to see the content. But this has been some time ago (it was still Intervocative). So I do not know if this has changed until now.

Take care,
Alex
