| Posted: | | | | Hi everyone! I'm lookiing for something similar to this. But for LOTS more CD/DVDs. I'm talking about somewhere around 3000 discs (or several smaller boxes for e.g. 300-500 discs). Also, it would be great if it was USB-controlled or so. Has anyone ever seen something like that?. Combined with DVD Profiler it would be would be a hell-of-a disc archiving system Cheers! | | | How do I set my laser-printer on stun? |

| Posted: | | | | There are much better systems out there. Remember you will get what you paid for. I would not recomend something like that due to being manual and the change of scratching disc would be too great. IMHO. |

| Posted: | | | | Have you thought of going to a Media Center system, considering if you went with 30 of those Discgear cases @ 59.95 each your looking at $1,798.50. I use Microsoft Media Center and it allows me to store all my music, movies, and TV on a hard drive(s), the physical media is stored away in boxes.
Example in my home we have the primary media center that has music, movies, and DVRs our TV programs connected to the TV in the living room. Then this media center PC is connected to XBOX 360s throughout the house via the home network. The XBOX 360s work as extenders so any TV in the house can watch or listen to the entertainment we have stored on the Media Center PC. | | | Are you local? This is a local shop the strangers you would bring would not understand us, our customs, our local ways. |

I've been givng the media center idea some serious thought, however storage space always seem to be the limiting factor for me. I've just tipped past 3000 profiles in my database. Granted, that's not the total number of discs what with parent profiles, but the actual number is certainly something well over 2000. Now, figure approximately 4 GB per disc, on average, multiplied by 2k discs, and I'm looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 terrabytes just to handle my DVDs. In reality, it's probably more like 10+. So now I'm building a RAID server with redundancy and spares and all of a sudden costs are starting to spiral out of control. I really do like the concept of a media server, but I'm not real excited about the expense. |

| Posted: | | | | If you are taking ISO files or full copies (including menus/etc), it could be up to 8 GB per movie. However, I've found that converting just the movie to divx using their 1080 profile cuts the size down to at least half. But if you want to do your Blu-Ray movies..... I'm currently setting up an interface using Boxee. |

| Posted: | | | | With the RAID setup, use RAID5. That way, you only lose one drive in your array for redundancy vs half for mirroring. It's slower to write to, but it's just as fast as a RAID1 for reading. |

I'm currently setting up an interface using Boxee. Yeah, I was referring to full copies. If I'm going to set up a media server so I no longer need to access my discs, then I want to be able to still hit the special features, etc. Beyond that, the divx route is a non-starter for me. Between ripping the ISO and then doing the coversion, a single movie will take anywhere between 2 and 3 hours. Now, multiply that by over 2000 movies and god knows how many TV episodes and I could spend the next few years doing nothing but converting my library. I'm just not that patient. |

Seems you have missed the extensive discussion of USB-style changers in the Plugins Forum. Most popular are Dacal and Ziotek brands. Each one holds 100 - 150 discs, depending on whether an internal DVD drive is included, and can be controlled via DVDP with the plugin called LoadDVD, or LoadDVD Pro. Up to 127 units can be addressed with the driver software, and USB daisey chaining ports are built-in. For slightly more cash, you can get 400 disc DVD changers for about $300 each. Again, several models of Sony brand units can be controlled from DVDP (3 per model number). Keep in mind that all the hard drive solutions require a server and maintenance, and at least two copies of the data. Yes, you have the disks as backup - but time is money if you have to re-rip 3000 after a server crash. Personally, I use a mix-mash of all of the above. I have USB changers, Firewire changers, RS232 and IR changers, DVDs on the hard drive, and shelves with physical DVDs. Slowly evolving to cataloging them all with DVDP, and accessing all of the changer-based and harddrive-based discs automatically with LoadDVD Pro. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! BDPFrog. | | | Last edited: by mediadogg |

I must admit I stumbled across it shortly after my post But still, the Dacal/Ziotek/Sony-solutions are kind of expensive and kind of impractical, especially for managing 3000+ discs. Sure, you can plug them together or whatever, but they'll use up lots of space in my apartment (which is what I am trying to conserve). I thought of the media-centre solution as well, but I've dismissed it for the same reasons as mdnitoil: LOTS of disc space needed (= lots of money) or YEARS of conversion time... Best would be some Dacal/Ziotek/Sony device with a capacity of 3000 discs, that takes up maybe as much space as an old jukebox and all for somewhere around 700 bucks.... I know I'm a dreamer *sigh* | | | How do I set my laser-printer on stun? |

| Posted: | | | | Look no further, here it is: http://www.kaleidescape.com/products/servers/3U/
You can store 3,600 DVD's on it! If you win the lottery, only fair you buy two and give me one for finding it!
