| Posted: | | | | I did try to search the forums for references to digital copies however I kept getting kicked out to the login page.
I have a large collection - somewhere around 2000 DVDs and they all take up a lot of space - too much space I'm afraid. My solution has been to convert many of my DVDs to digital copies using Handbrake then box and store the physical DVD away out of sight where they don't take up as much space. I've also done this with any DVD my daughter - now 3 years old and counting would be watching. No more possibility of scratched DVDs or damaged DVD players. Has anyone known a kid to put toast into a VCR all those years ago?
Some movies I will keep on DVD - box sets and the "best of" movies that we may still play from DVD.
The problem is that I'd like to differentiate the movies I have kept on physical media and those that now reside on a file server ready to play using XBMC. Are there plans to add this capability or is there a way to do that currently either in the application or through plug-ins?
Yes, where I live I am currently permitted to make "back-up" copies so please, no comments that I am doing something wrong by converting my movies. I have the physical copies but they reside in boxes at a rented storage locker.
Thanks in advance for suggestions and a bigger thanks to the developers if this is a feature that can be added. My interim plan was to list digital copies as "Ordered" or "Wish List".
In addition my wife also purchases magazines from Poland and they come with "free" DVDs. I'd like to enter these in our collection and differentiate these also. While they don't take up as much space they are stored in plastic shoe boxes and it would be good to know that is where we need to look for the DVD when viewing our collection. |

You can also store the filename in the notes, for example in the format the LoadDVD plugin uses (you might want to check that plugin out). | | | Regards Lars |

| Posted: | | | | I think I would create a new collection category (just as you can have Ordered ,Wishlist etc), maybe name it Digital, and then move all those movies to it. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 | | | Last edited: by Nexus the Sixth |

I would do the same, I've recently extended my collection categories so I now have - "gifts","Blu Ray", "Recorded from TV" Or you could just add a tag as Lars suggested - that would work as well. | | | Paul | | | Last edited: by pauls42 |

This sounds like the easiest way to do it and it is the way I would do it as well. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. DVD Profiler has fields "Location" and "Slot" which most people use for this purpose. Other people use those fields to indicate where to actually find the file on the server, and plugins such as LoadDVD can be made to interface with XBMC to play the file from DVD Profiler. | | | Thanks for your support. | Posted: | | | | Thanks for all the replies. I will have to look more closely through the menus within the software to see the newest features. I will try setting up a new Category for my digital copies and those DVDs from the magazine and see how that works out. I know there is other software out there but I've been happy with DVD Profiler - it has done what I need and seems it will do more with all the development work that has been done.
In time I will look to the LoadDVD plugin as well but for the time being I am content using DVD Profiler as an electronic card catalog. It is not that hard to look up a movie in Profiler, get the DVD or file ready then sit down and watch it.
That and any integration has to be wife-friendly - I'm not going to worry about my kids - they'll learn to do whatever is necessary I'm sure. I'm just happy they can't accidentally destroy our DVDs as they'll be stored safely out of reach and eventually I will never have to touch them except to convert to digital format. |

This is after all DVDProfiler, not HDDProfiler or DigitalCopyProfiler. That simply means that such copies cannot be Contributed to the Online database, even though you could set them up by tags, or even as separate collections | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! The OP seems to be asking how he can track his copies locally only, not how to contribute them. Personally, I would create a Custom Category, as you will then have them all separated in their own tab. Alternatively, you can also work with tags but that won't keep your copies separated from your originals. | | | Blu-ray collection DVD collection My Games My Trophies |

| Posted: | | | | Except for the hot button that it seems to push, there is nothing special about the information relating to digital copies that may be stored in Location, Slot, Notes and Tags. Personal information is never contributed, regardless of the context. You can put whatever you want in those fields.
I think the more interesting requirement that the OP has, is the need to catalog the magazine-related DVDs, using DVD Profiler. I don't think I saw any responses to that ... I wonder if those DVDs have a UPC or discID? | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! | Posted: | | | | Disc ID, yes. The part of the UPC we track is typically the same for all issues of a magazine. |
